Many bright spots of digital transformation in agriculture

Implementing agricultural digitalization is an opportunity for Vinh Long agricultural production to change the small-scale, inefficient production model to replace it with an agriculture with transparent data and product information, helping the province's agricultural sector reach further and be more responsible towards consumers.

Digital transformation in agriculture also contributes to improving management efficiency, helping producers and businesses understand market demand, promoting modern, high-tech agriculture. In recent times, the application of scientific and technological advances and mechanization in agricultural production has been increasingly improved; in which, mechanization of stages in rice production has many breakthroughs.

In many localities in the province, high-tech agricultural production models, circular agriculture and organic production, and digital applications in production have brought about clear results. Farmers have gradually overcome the barriers of small-scale, fragmented, unconnected production, and cultivation that mainly relies on traditional methods. Instead, many farmers and cooperatives have equipped many modern machinery systems to serve production, such as drones, cluster seeders, methane emission monitoring systems, and smart insect monitoring systems.

Through smart mobile phones, farmers can monitor pest density in the fields and observe water salinity while sitting at home...

Cooperatives also strengthen technical communication and pest management through social platforms such as Zalo and Facebook; apply high technology to rice production, use certified rice varieties, sparse sowing and use microbial fertilizers to help rice have fewer pests and diseases, bring cleaner and safer products and contribute to environmental protection. In addition, the production process of "1 must, 5 reductions", "3 reductions, 3 increases" helps save a lot of costs by reducing seeds, fertilizers and labor, helping members increase profits significantly compared to old practices.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Nhan - Chairman of the Board of Directors and Director of Binh Hoa Phuoc Rambutan Cooperative (An Binh Commune) said that over the past 3 years, the Cooperative has promoted digital transformation by entering data on fertilizer and pesticide use so that consumers can update information about growing areas. Trading is also carried out through the Vinh Long agricultural product trading floor and the e-commerce trading floor.

Applying 4.0 technology to agricultural production processes brings many benefits such as: reducing costs, labor, creating high-quality, safe and environmentally friendly agricultural products; maximum savings on production costs. Thanks to that, members of the cooperative know how to focus on ensuring the quantity and quality of products, creating trust and reputation with customers to build a brand.

Mr. Truong Hoa Thuan - Director of Phuoc Hao Agricultural Cooperative (Hung My commune) said: "Rice cultivation now uses drones for spraying, cluster sowing machines for sowing, and harvesting and straw rolling are all done by machines. Insect and disease monitoring are all done through phone apps. This method of cultivation is very effective, farmers at home can also know how many insects there are in the rice today, if there are few, they do not spray pesticides. Mechanization and investment in modern equipment help the cooperative save significantly on production costs, increasing profits for members."

To increase the efficiency of digital transformation in agriculture

Digital transformation in agriculture helps improve production efficiency, create safe, quality products, and meet the increasing demands of the market.
Digital transformation in agriculture helps improve production efficiency, create safe, quality products, and meet the increasing demands of the market.

According to the assessment of the functional sector, recent successes of agriculture also have many contributions from the implementation of a system of scientific and technological development solutions, taking advantage of the achievements of Industry 4.0 and Digital Transformation in agriculture as a comprehensive solution contributing to improving the efficiency of the whole sector, creating a breakthrough in rapid and sustainable development, increasing added value and efficiency.

Accordingly, the functional sector promotes the implementation of scientific and technological tasks in production, processing and tracing the origin of agricultural products; responding to climate change, solutions to ensure livelihoods; testing and experimenting with varieties before proposing and replicating them... These activities continue to apply proven scientific advances to production practices, while shaping new directions to increase the rate of automation, diversify products and livelihoods to adapt and reduce risks to market price fluctuations, changing consumer trends and climate change.

However, the digital transformation in agriculture still faces many difficulties and obstacles. Specifically, the infrastructure for agricultural development applying new technologies is not yet synchronous; the rural agricultural infrastructure has not yet met the requirements of agricultural modernization; the level of production mechanization is still low, and the supporting technologies serving agricultural development are not commensurate. The application of information technology by enterprises and production households has largely not yet met the requirements of digital transformation due to the lack of large databases for production, lack of transparency in product origin, lack of connection and information sharing of all stages from production, management, logistics, agricultural product trade, etc.

According to the Department of Agriculture and Environment, the agricultural sector will continue to replicate the organic agricultural model, build a pilot model of circular agriculture; promote the effectiveness of effective high-tech applications in agricultural production such as: using drones, advanced irrigation technology, integrated crop management measures, applying organic fertilizers and pesticides, etc.

At the same time, continue to promote the significance of digital transformation in agriculture, especially the access and application of digital technologies from production to processing, distribution, and consumption of agricultural products, the opportunities and challenges in the digital transformation process in the agricultural sector. Thereby, gradually helping farmers change their awareness, management methods, production and consumption of products from traditional to modern and smart, transforming their thinking from agricultural production to agricultural economic development.

The Department of Agriculture and Environment has implemented many digital transformation projects in the agricultural sector such as: software system for managing growing areas and packaging facilities; system for managing farming areas and livestock farms; software for managing monitoring data and warnings about aquatic environment; coordinating in cooperation, building, and piloting digital transformation applications for traceability of products in the agricultural sector...
