On April 8 (New York time), the United Nations Security Council held a meeting to hear reports on the latest developments related to the conflict in Ukraine.

According to VNA correspondent in New York, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Tom Fletcher, in his speech before the Security Council, called on the international community to increase support and take more action to protect civilians in war zones.

According to Mr. Fletcher, nearly 13 million people in Ukraine are in urgent need of humanitarian aid due to homelessness, psychological trauma and disruption of essential services.

In recent weeks, the ongoing fighting has caused many civilian casualties, including children, and severely damaged vital infrastructure such as health care facilities, schools, etc.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Tom Fletcher stressed that parties to conflicts have an obligation to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure in accordance with international humanitarian law; indiscriminate attacks on civilians are strictly prohibited.

Some 3.7 million Ukrainians have been displaced by the fighting, with nearly 7 million others living in refugee camps, a senior UN official said.

Civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure were also reported in Russia's Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions.

Amid the surge in demand, the UN-led $2.6 billion humanitarian response plan has received only about 17% of funding.

Mr. Fletcher stressed the need to increase financial support to ensure humanitarian activities can continue to reach those most in need./.
