These days, in Co Loi village, Ba Son commune (new), more than 9,800 yellow camellia trees are growing strongly, covering the hills with green. This is a medicinal plant variety with high economic value, suitable for the highland climate, and has been supported by Ba Son Border Guard Station to be planted since 2021.
Mr. Duong Trung Ly, one of the first households to participate in the model, said: My family was supported with 100 yellow camellia trees. Up to now, some of the trees have started to flower, I have dried and sold some. Recently, I was supported with 150 more trees from 1.5 to 2.5m high to build a model tea garden. I believe that when expanded, the tea garden will help my family and the people have a more stable income. We are confident in sticking with the land, together with the army to protect the border area.
From 2022 to present, Ba Son Border Guard Station has also supported more than 12,800 Bat Do bamboo roots and 3 breeding cows for people in Ba Son commune. Crops and livestock are growing well, suitable for the local climate and soil.
Lieutenant Colonel Tran Van Hung, Deputy Political Commissar of Ba Son Border Post, said: After nearly 3 years of implementing the models, the yellow camellia trees are now blooming and Bat Do bamboo has begun to grow shoots. People do not harvest the shoots early but let the trees grow into large bushes, increasing the ability to grow sustainably. We send staff to provide technical guidance so that people can combine farming and raising livestock in the direction of short-term use to support long-term use. Through practical implementation, the models have helped people change their production mindset, shifting to commodity cultivation to increase income.
In other border areas, many livelihood models are also being effectively implemented. In Mau Son commune (new), in May 2025, the Chi Ma Border Guard Station supported two poor households to build a "model garden" to grow pear guava and red-fleshed ruby guava. Each household was provided with 250 seedlings and instructions on care techniques. This is a model suitable for local conditions, low investment costs, and brings a stable source of income.
Since 2021, border guards have deployed 6 livelihood models and provided nearly 30,000 seedlings and about 1,000 livestock of various types to help border residents develop their economy and improve their lives. The total value of support is about 1.5 billion VND.
In particular, the model of “Vietnam Border Bamboo Fence” is being widely replicated in border communes. Up to now, the border guards have coordinated with the people to plant more than 17,750 bamboo trees along the border.
Mr. Nguyen Trong Vinh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoang Van Thu Commune (new) said: Tan Thanh Border Guard Station supported people to plant more than 3,000 bamboo trees. Many bamboo bushes are over 2m high. Bamboo trees do not require much care and are rarely affected by pests. When stable, people can harvest bamboo shoots from June to October every year. Planting bamboo trees contributes to maintaining the border and improving the lives of people in the border area.
Particularly from the beginning of 2025 until now, from the support capital of the Border Guard Command, the Border Guard Command, the Provincial Military Command has coordinated with the Party Committees and authorities of communes in the border area to donate 20 breeding cows to poor households, with a total value of about 300 million VND. At the same time, the border posts have supported and guided people to build 3 "model gardens" on an area of 1,600 m², serving as a model for replication in border communes.
It can be seen that these models have helped people have more livelihoods, gradually improve their lives, contribute to changing production thinking, encourage people to form specialized commodity production, and link agricultural products to the market.
Colonel Luong Manh Vong, Deputy Political Commissar, Border Guard Command, Provincial Military Command said: Developing people's lives in border areas is a strategic task, contributing to sustainable poverty reduction and consolidating the foundation of a solid people's position. In the coming time, we will continue to coordinate with local authorities and businesses to replicate effective models, focusing on crops and livestock suitable to the characteristics of each region. At the same time, we will strengthen technology transfer, market connection, and build product value chains to increase people's income.
From barren lands, livelihood models deployed by the Border Guard are gradually changing the face of the border areas. These models are bearing fruit, not only helping to improve people's lives but also firmly consolidating the people's hearts and minds at the Fatherland's border.
