Recently, a video recording the performance of contestant Nguyen Linh Chi at the final round of Miss Sea Vietnam Global 2025 quickly spread on social networks. The question for the top 5: " If you became a sea creature, which creature would you choose and why?"
First runner-up of Miss Sea Vietnam Global 2025 Nguyen Linh Chi caused a stir with her answer "Octopus - symbol of modern women".
Nguyen Linh Chi - with her striking appearance and gentle voice - chose octopus as the answer.
She argued: " For me, every living thing has a value. For me, every living thing has its own certain value.
If forced to choose a creature, I would choose the octopus because the octopus not only stands out with its own values, magical camouflage and speaks... and especially the octopus has good values, keeping the marine ecosystem in balance.
For me, the octopus is a symbol of a modern woman, intelligent, flexible and adaptable in an era where society is growing strongly. We not only need a woman with outstanding appearance but also beauty from deep within, a good personality and meaning for the community."
Although the content was somewhat creative, the association of octopus with modern women was considered forced and unconvincing. However, Linh Chi won the title of 1st runner-up, attracting many mixed opinions from the online community.
The behavioral part of the contest is designed to demonstrate the knowledge, bravery and personality of the beauties - but not everyone understands it clearly and prepares well. Contestant Ngoc Lua's behavior during the final night of Miss Ocean 2017 is an example.
When asked what he would do to protect the marine environment if he were crowned, Ngoc Lua replied: "First, I will go home and hug my parents. The next thing I will do is go around my neighborhood to teach the kids how to pick up trash, teach them how to protect the environment and not litter. I will also call on my peers to join hands in protecting the environment."
Many contestants have caused a stir with their shocking statements about the crown. At Miss Universe Vietnam 2017, contestant Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang caused a heated debate with her straightforward response: “The crown means fame and high income. Like Ms. Pham Huong, she attends a lot of events and earns a lot of money.”
The seemingly innocent answer highlights a pragmatic, shallow view of the mission of a beauty queen. When asked: "How much money is enough?" , she calmly replied: " Human greed is bottomless. Earn as much as you can."
She was criticized for her “shocking” statement and left the competition amidst uproar and loss of sympathy from the audience. Huyen Trang ended her dream of becoming Miss Universe Vietnam because of her “shocking” statement.
When talking about the "once in a lifetime" responses at beauty contests, we cannot ignore the stunning answer of contestant Nguyen Thi Loan (Top 5 Miss Vietnam 2010), when she said: " Hanoi is... a source of pride for me".
Many people still explain the silly, off-topic answers as being due to the contestants being “stage-shy”, under the pressure of the lights, and psychological stress. The reality is more cruel: the problem is not pressure, but ability.
Most beauty pageant contestants today lack the basic skills of critical thinking and coherent expression. They cannot improvise when asked off-script questions, do not know how to organize their ideas and express themselves fluently despite having practiced thoroughly before.
Some competitions even prepare a “question bank” and instruct contestants to practice speaking in advance, but that only covers up the formality. When standing on stage, under the scrutiny of hundreds of eyes, the contestants' true abilities will be clearly revealed - from thinking, life experience to expression skills.
The poor quality of contestants is not only a matter of individual issues, but also a consequence of the proliferation of substandard contests, where the title of “beauty queen” is sometimes no longer commensurate with the value it once represented.
Besides prestigious and well-invested playgrounds such as Miss Vietnam, Miss Universe Vietnam, Miss World Vietnam..., where contestants are professionally trained and the organization process is closely monitored, there are more and more small, uncensored competitions, organized haphazardly, following the trend of "beauty reigns supreme".
Without selection, control and improved entry standards, beauty titles will become increasingly devalued - and the public will gradually turn their backs on unworthy crowns.
