According to The San Diego Union Tribune , Pope Francis condemned the "staggering increase in attacks against Jews around the world" and the rise in anti-Semitic racism since the Gaza conflict on Oct. 7, 2023.

On February 3, Pope Francis, in a letter to the Jewish community in Israel, the content of which was released by the Vatican, wrote: "We, Catholics, are deeply concerned about the alarming increase in attacks against Jews around the world. The conflict between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip has divided the international community and fueled racism and hatred, sometimes leading to anti-Semitism and anti-Semitism."

He called for prayers for the release of the “hostages” held by Hamas. According to Israel, Hamas has held about 250 hostages and so far there are 132 hostages in Gaza, of whom at least 27 are believed to have died.
