China increases pepper imports sharply, Vietnam needs a methodical strategy to maintain market share
In the first five months of this year, China imported more than 4,000 tons of pepper, equivalent to 25.5 million USD, a sharp increase in both volume and value compared to the same period last year. Indonesia continued to hold the position of the largest supplier with more than 2,200 tons, accounting for more than half of the total import volume. Vietnam ranked second, reaching more than 1,280 tons, although increasing in volume but slightly decreasing in market share, mainly due to the sharp increase in Vietnam's export price of 62%, much higher than the price of pepper from Indonesia.
In addition, China also increased imports from other markets such as Brazil and Malaysia. However, China's domestic consumption only meets about 20-30% of demand, the rest depends on imports.
However, exporting Vietnamese pepper to China still faces difficulties due to the policy of tightening border trade and high costs if going by sea, while Chinese import enterprises are still cautious.
In the context of China being an important consumer market with a demand of up to 90,000 - 100,000 tons per year, the Vietnamese pepper industry is facing the problem of needing to reorganize export activities in a more professional manner to increase market share, competitiveness and enhance its position in this potential market.
