Latest durian news

The market share of durian and Vietnamese fruits in China is facing fierce competition as the country continuously signs trade agreements with Cambodia and Thailand.

On June 7, Cambodia and China signed a strategic cooperation agreement on the export of 20,000 tons of dried mangoes in the 2025-2027 period and 15,000 tons of durians in the 2025-2026 period, according to Khmertimeskh.

Under the agreement, China will import 3,000 tons of dried mangoes from Cambodia in 2025.

Not only mango, Cambodia also focuses on its main product, durian. At the end of April, the General Administration of Customs of China granted permission for fresh durian from Cambodia to be transported into the country. Thus, Cambodia officially entered the durian "playground" worth nearly 7 billion USD in the market of 1 billion people.

Although it does not have a prominent brand, experts say that Cambodian durian has its own advantages such as low production costs and support from Chinese investors. Therefore, durian growing techniques in Cambodia are improving day by day.

Besides Cambodia, Thailand - one of the world's leading durian exporting countries - has also taken many measures to maintain its "throne" in the Chinese market.

Since the beginning of this year, China has tightened inspections on 100% of durian batches from all importing countries for Cadmium residue and yellow O. However, the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives said that the country is ready to supply durian to the Chinese market when the season peaks.

Meanwhile, China also created favorable conditions for Thai durian, when the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) agreed to open customs checkpoints 24/7; at the same time, increasing the number of laboratories on the Chinese side of the border.

The move will help Thailand speed up testing for yellow O contamination and export durian during the harvest peak season.

Thus, China has gradually reduced its dependence on a large market like Vietnam or Thailand. Instead, the country is increasing fruit imports from many other countries to enrich its options in terms of price and product quality.
