According to the UN Secretary-General, over the past eight decades, more than 2,000 nuclear tests have been conducted at more than 60 locations around the world, leaving a “legacy of destruction” that has rendered many areas uninhabitable and caused many long-term consequences for human health.

Mr. Guterres warned that recent calls for the resumption of nuclear testing showed that the terrible lessons of the past were being “ignored or forgotten.”

He stated: "On the occasion of International Day against Nuclear Testing, the world must speak out together to permanently end this activity."

He also called on countries to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT) so that this document can soon come into effect, emphasizing that this is the only treaty that bans all nuclear testing activities and is an essential, verifiable security tool for this issue.

The CTBT is a multilateral agreement that bans all nuclear tests, whether for peaceful or military purposes. It was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1996 and has been signed by 187 countries but has not yet entered into force.
