Jordanian Foreign Ministry spokesman Sufian Qudah said Jordan was in talks with Saudi authorities about burying or repatriating the dead at the request of their families. Saudi authorities are also continuing to search for 17 missing people.

A day earlier, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry announced that six Jordanians had died of heatstroke during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

On June 15, more than 1.5 million Muslims braved the heat to reach Mount Arafat to perform the annual Hajj pilgrimage and perform hours of prayer. The Hajj is one of the world's largest religious ceremonies.

Specifically, believers must climb a 70m high rocky hill to reach the place where it is believed that Prophet Mohammed gave his last sermon.

A Saudi study published last month found that temperatures in the region are rising by 0.4 degrees Celsius per decade. Temperatures reached 43 degrees Celsius on June 15, making it difficult for pilgrims to reach Mount Arafat, who spent the night in tents in the Mina Valley outside Mecca.

Saudi Arabian officials have urged pilgrims to drink plenty of water and take measures to protect themselves from the sun.

According to a Saudi Arabian official, in 2023, the country recorded more than 10,000 cases of heatstroke, of which 10% were sunstroke.
