Djokovic reaches 100 wins at Wimbledon

(Dan Tri) - Novak Djokovic won his 100th match at Wimbledon on the morning of July 6, when he defeated compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 to reach the fourth round of the Grand Slam tournament on grass for the 17th time.

In what was arguably his best performance of the week, the 38-year-old Serbian took complete control of the match against Kecmanovic. Djokovic dominated the serve and delighted the crowd on center court with some deft volleys, advancing to the second week of the tournament in just one hour and 47 minutes.

This was Djokovic's fourth consecutive win over Kecmanovic, taking his head-to-head record to 4-0 in the series. In particular, he also maintained a perfect 8-0 record against his compatriots at Grand Slams. With his 100th win at Wimbledon, Djokovic is now second only to Roger Federer (105) in men's singles wins at the tournament.

Speaking about his 100-win milestone, Djokovic said: "I am very grateful, very honored to be where I am. Tennis has shaped me, it has given me things in life that I have been able to experience. I try not to take anything for granted, especially at this age. I am still going strong, trying to compete with the younger players.

Wimbledon is my favorite tournament and a dream tournament not only for me but probably for most players. Growing up, most kids dream of playing here and winning here and I've been very lucky to have done that many times. Any history I made at my favorite tournament, I'm very lucky."

Federer is the only player to have reached the fourth round more times than Djokovic. The Swiss legend has reached that stage 18 times, while Djokovic will play in the last 16 for the 17th time when he meets Alex de Minaur on Monday. The Australian missed out on Djokovic's quarter-final last year due to injury but has secured a place against the sixth seed this year after beating Denmark's August Holmgren 6-4, 7-6(5), 6-3.

Djokovic, who is 24-8 on the season, is aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam title. If he wins Wimbledon, he will equal Federer's record of eight Grand Slam victories on grass. After dropping a set in his opening match against Alexandre Muller, the former world No. 1 beat Daniel Evans and was comfortable against Kecmanovic.

"It's never easy to play against a friend. Miomir is a super nice guy. Someone I've known for many years and played against on many different surfaces. More than opponents and competitors, we are friends and teammates," Djokovic said of Kecmanovic.

Djokovic earned the decisive break of the first set in the eighth game, showing quick reflexes and impressive agility at the net. The 100-times champion then cruised through the second set with ease and was broken early in the third when Kecmanovic double-faulted. Kecmanovic tried to find comfort in the few games he won, raising his hands high after holding serve twice in the third set.

Djokovic moves up one place to fifth in the live rankings for the year and will leapfrog Jack Draper into fourth place if he reaches the quarter-finals. Djokovic leads 2-1 in the head-to-head series ahead of his match against De Minaur.
