Delegates attending the opening of the Forum
The National Press Forum was born as an invitation to reflect and affirm the proactive spirit of overcoming difficulties of the Vietnamese press. The Vietnam Journalists Association hopes that this will be a prestigious annual forum, a place for exchange and connection between journalists, managers, media and technology experts at home and abroad. The forum continues to carry the expectation of creating breakthrough movements for a professional, modern and humane press.
Speaking at the opening of the event, Member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Education Commission, President of the Vietnam Journalists Association Le Quoc Minh summarized some important points about the Vietnamese Press: Challenges and opportunities, ready for a new era.
Mr. Le Quoc Minh said: In the context of the world changing strongly under the impact of digital technology , artificial intelligence and globalization, Vietnamese press is facing unprecedented challenges, while opening up great opportunities if it knows how to proactively adapt and innovate. The biggest challenges today are the pressure on speed and fake news causing chaos, reducing the reputation of the press if the source of information is not well controlled; difficulty in controlling content when there is a lot of bad news, fake news, and false information on social networks, making it difficult for journalists to verify; competition and dependence on platforms because the press increasingly has to rely on social networks to reach readers, thereby gradually losing control of the "original source of information".
Member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of Nhan Dan Newspaper, Deputy Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission, President of the Vietnam Journalists Association Le Quoc Minh delivered the opening speech at the Forum.
As a result, newspapers lose their traditional readers, many people switch to using social networks as their main source of information, causing traditional newspapers to lose a significant portion of their readers; the risk of losing direction when news is dominated by the number of interactions (likes, shares, comments...) on social networks can lead to chasing trends, sensationalism, and ignoring the core values of journalism: accuracy and objectivity.
However, according to Mr. Le Quoc Minh, the new era also brings many opportunities for the press to assert its leading role. It is an opportunity for comprehensive digital transformation, taking advantage of technology to improve content quality, personalize user experience and expand distribution channels. Press agencies should stop trying to please all readers, instead, focus resources on high-value content types that are clearly different from the synthetic answers from AI search engines.
Specifically, press agencies need to develop a comprehensive digital transformation strategy; apply AI to the journalism process; automate news production and analyze big data; personalize content; use AI to support reader interaction; verify and detect fake news; strengthen cooperation and ensure professional ethics; promote the creation of digital journalism products, diversify revenue sources, etc.
Opening scene of the Forum
Regarding the issue of press revenue, Mr. Le Quoc Minh also cited a report from the Reuters Institute of Journalism to emphasize that the press should not depend solely on advertising, but must expand to other sources of revenue, such as collecting reader fees, building press brands, participating in the policy communication market and even repositioning print newspapers.
After the opening session, from June 19-20, 10 thematic sessions of the Forum will take place. The Organizing Committee hopes that, through the discussion sessions from the Forum, press agencies will proactively and boldly experiment to find their own path, while contributing to the overall development of the Vietnamese Revolutionary Press./.
