Three employees in their 40s and 60s were stabbed and injured, including a man in his 40s who was taken to hospital and later died. NHK quoted police as saying that two others, a man and a woman, were still conscious.

A 43-year-old unemployed local man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, NHK added.

In January, three men were injured in a stabbing in Tokyo's tourist hotspot Akihabara.

In recent years, there have been a number of high-profile cases involving random knife attacks and arson on subways in Japan, and there is growing concern about homemade guns and explosives.
