Fountain criticized as 'world's ugliest'

A newly built $2 million fountain in Vienna, Austria, is considered by many to be "the ugliest in the world " because its shape is not as beautiful as expected.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of the modern water supply system that brought fresh water to Vienna from streams in the Alps, the Austrian capital city launched a design competition to build the fountain. The design of a group of artists in the city was selected and the original was built.

Inaugurated on October 24 by Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen, Vienna's newest fountain, the WirWasser, quickly attracted public attention. Many called it "the ugliest fountain in Europe," "the ugliest in the world," or "the ugliest ever," especially since it cost $2 million to build. "The fountain damages the beautiful image of Vienna in the eyes of tourists," one commenter wrote.

"The building looks like it was created by a 5-year-old child", "Many others could have created something more beautiful for less money", "Where is Vienna with its beautiful heritage" were other critical comments.

Despite the criticism, Mayor Michael Ludwig said the fountain was an extraordinary design, inspired by reality and created a sense of togetherness. Faced with criticism that it had wasted $2 million on “the ugliest fountain in the world,” the city said it had managed to save $300,000.

In addition to the new fountain, visitors to the Austrian capital can participate in other experiences suggested by Tripadvisor such as listening to a classical concert at St. Peter's Basilica, joining a day tour to the famous village of Hallstatt, a tour of Vienna, and visiting the 1,441-room Schönbrunn (Beautiful Stream) castle.
