Thaksin Shinawatra's daughter nominated as candidate for Thai prime minister

Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra (38 years old), leader of the Pheu Thai Party, was nominated by the ruling coalition as the prime minister candidate on August 15, according to Reuters. Pheu Thai is the largest party in the coalition.

Thailand's House of Representatives will hold a special vote on August 16 to choose a new prime minister after the Constitutional Court dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on August 14.

If she gains enough support, Paetongtarn could become the third member of the Shinawatra family to become Prime Minister of Thailand, after her father and aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra.

Candidates for the August 16 vote must be nominated by parties ahead of the general election in May 2023. Pheu Thai has only two options: Ms. Paetongtarn and Mr. Chaikasem Nitisiri.

Speaking after her nomination, Ms Paetongtarn pledged to continue to push forward the policies of Pheu Thai and its coalition partners. She stressed that the country must move forward and that Pheu Thai was ready to work. She promised to carry out her duties to the best of her ability and said her father often gave her advice.

"We are determined to move the country forward together," Paetongtarn said at a press conference.

Ms. Paetongtarn Shinawatra has a BA in Sociology and Anthropology from Chulalongkorn University (Thailand) and a MA in International Hotel Management from the University of Surrey (UK).
