In June 2025, Lyon FC received a decision to be demoted to Ligue 2 due to financial regulations violations. The decision was announced by the French Professional Football League (LFP) after receiving a report from the DNCG Financial Control Authority.
According to DNCG, Lyon has a debt of 175 million Euros but has not provided a clear financial plan to overcome it. Although Lyon has affirmed that it has fully cooperated and received new capital from shareholders, DNCG still believes that the financial situation is not reliable enough.
However, in the latest announcement, the French Football Federation (FFF) confirmed: “In the meeting on July 9, 2025 at the FFF headquarters, the DNCG Financial Control Body decided to: Cancel the decision to administratively demote the first team to Ligue 2 after the 2024/2025 season, and at the same time monitor the salary fund and transfer costs based on the expected Ligue 1 budget for the 2025/2026 season”.
The French team's homepage also confirmed: "Lyon FC welcomes the DNCG's decision to keep the team in Ligue 1. Lyon FC would like to thank the Appeal Committee for recognizing the ambition of the new leadership, who are determined to ensure a serious management model in the future."
With this new decision, Lyon will not only "stay in the league" but also keep their place in the European Cup C2 next season, thanks to their 6th place in Ligue 1 in the 2024/2025 season.
