From Hung Yen to Hanoi to visit the exhibition of 80 years of national achievements, wearing a soldier's uniform, the first destination of veteran Nguyen Duy Thuyen (73 years old) was the exhibition space of Quang Tri province. He was one of the veterans who participated in the 81-day and night campaign to protect Quang Tri Citadel in 1972. Looking at the artifacts and images, Mr. Thuyen proudly introduced them to his family members and visitors to the exhibition.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Thuyen shared that Quang Tri was his first destination because this was the place of youth and unforgettable memories for soldiers like him. Especially when he experienced the fierce war in Quang Tri Citadel.

Having fought at the Citadel front when he was just 19 years old, Mr. Thuyen is now a 2/4 disabled veteran. “After nearly 2 months of fighting, I was injured and transferred to the rear for treatment. Perhaps that was also a lucky thing for me, many comrades could never return…”, Mr. Thuyen sadly shared.

The memories of the fierce and tragic Citadel battlefield are recreated through documentary images displayed at the exhibition space, making many veterans unable to hold back their tears. Veteran Phan Van Hung (born in 1954), from Phu Tho , burst into tears while talking to the tour guide at the exhibition booth of historical artifacts and documents. Mr. Hung shared: “Many comrades sacrificed their lives at the Citadel battlefield. I am still alive and returning as a privilege, so every year I visit the old battlefield and witness the daily changes of my hometown Quang Tri, I feel very happy…”.

Since the opening of the exhibition, the booth displaying historical artifacts of Quang Tri province has always attracted a large number of visitors of all ages. But there are very special guests, they quietly and thoughtfully look at each image as if watching a film of memories of a heroic time of fire and smoke. They are the soldiers of Quang Tri Citadel.

Ms. Tran Nu Hoang Chinh, a tour guide at the exhibition space, confided that during her days on duty here, she witnessed many special guests like that. Many people quickly wiped away their tears before leaving, and there were also people who were willing to share their memories of the soldiers of the past. Their stories are materials and catalysts for us to feel and convey to visitors...

The battle to protect the Citadel will forever be an unforgettable memory for the soldiers. They were the ones who wrote an immortal epic, adding to the glorious history of the nation.
