Argentine superstar Lionel Messi, 38, has scored twice in five consecutive matches, bringing his total goals to 16 this season. This achievement has contributed significantly to Inter Miami's four wins and one draw in the recent series of matches.

Messi's scoring streak came to an end when Inter Miami lost to FC Cincinnati.
Messi's scoring streak came to an end when Inter Miami lost to FC Cincinnati.

Notably, since 2012 when he was still playing for Barcelona, Messi has never scored a double or more in five consecutive games, making this year's MLS achievement extremely impressive.

However, against a disciplined and solid FC Cincinnati, Messi and his teammates were almost helpless. Inter Miami only managed two shots on target throughout the match - a surprisingly low number compared to their recent devastating scoring form.

Cincinnati opened the scoring in the 16th minute thanks to young American midfielder Gerardo Valenzuela (20 years old). After the break, Brazilian striker Evander exploded, scoring two goals in the 50th and 70th minutes to seal a 3-0 victory for the home team.

The defeat leaves Inter Miami in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings with 11 wins and 5 draws, earning 38 points – eight points behind leaders Philadelphia. Philadelphia just beat Montreal to maintain first place, just one point ahead of Cincinnati.

Although Inter Miami have three games left to play against both Philadelphia and Cincinnati, Messi's team will have to win all three remaining games if they want to surpass their two rivals and claim the top spot in the group.

The remaining fixtures will be a big challenge for Messi and his teammates if they really want to make their ambition of winning the MLS championship this season a reality.
