At the closing ceremony on the evening of July 5, in the Vietnamese Film category, "Chi Dau" was honored as the best domestic work of the season. The project also won the categories of Best Screenplay and Best Actress for artist Viet Huong, and the NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) award for Best Vietnamese Film.
Director Khuong Ngoc said he once dreamed of receiving a trophy in his career, and the Da Nang Asian Film Festival (DANAFF) was a dream come true. He thanked his colleagues, family, friends, and audience for their support.
"Sister-in-law" explores the theme of intergenerational conflict in the family with a cast of all female main actors, focusing on the relationship between a sister-in-law (Viet Huong) and four brothers-in-law (Hong Dao, Dinh Y Nhung, Le Khanh, Ngoc Trinh). Each has a different personality and destiny, but is stuck in their own tragedy.
In the same category, the title of Best Actor went to Tuan Tran. He said he was surprised to be honored even though the nomination list included many talented faces such as Quoc Huy and Huynh Lap.
Victor Vu was honored as Best Director with the project " Detective Kien: The Headless Case". The work marks 20 years of his involvement in cinema, with detective and horror elements, which are Victor Vu's forte.
The jury's special prize goes to " Trang Quynh nhi: Legend of Kim Nguu" directed by Trinh Lam Tung. The work blends historical and fantasy elements on a folklore basis. Some details are inspired by ancient anecdotes about Trang Quynh, including the story "The Pregnant Male Buffalo".
Actor Huynh Kien An - judge of the Vietnamese Film category - commented that the 12 competing works mostly achieved good revenue at the theater such as "Billionaire Kiss" (VND 211 billion), "Getting Rich with Ghosts" (VND 128 billion). Horror elements dominated five projects, reflecting the taste of viewers. However, the films were not only purely entertaining but also carried messages about family and society such as "Sister-in-law" by director Khuong Ngoc, "Ancestral House" Directed by Huynh Lap.
Although there is no separate category for cinematography or production design, visual elements are one of the important criteria of the jury. "The judges are free to comment according to their personal perspective, but the result of the Outstanding Vietnamese Film has a high consensus. The jury's special prize belongs to animation, a field that is still facing many difficulties in Vietnam, which is an encouragement for those who are pursuing this field," said actor Kien An.
