This is the information that Liverpool fans have been waiting for for many weeks. The team's management has soon reached a personal agreement with Wirtz, successfully convincing the German midfielder to reject other clubs to choose Anfield as his destination.
But Liverpool encountered significant obstacles with Leverkusen, when the German team insisted on asking for Wirtz at 137 million euros, or 157 million USD.
After many negotiations, Liverpool finally reduced a significant amount to own Wirtz. According to BBC News, Liverpool will pay 118 million euros up front, and up to 19 million euros more in additional fees.
Liverpool will pay a maximum of 137 million euros for Wirtz. If the additional fees are fully met, Wirtz will become the 4th most expensive player in football history.
The current record belongs to PSG's purchase of Neymar from Barca in 2017 for 222 million euros. A year later, PSG approached their record again when they spent 180 million euros to buy Mbappe from Monaco.
In 2023, Caicedo became the third most expensive player in history and number 1 in the Premier League when Chelsea agreed to pay 145 million euros to Brighton.
According to Transfermarkt's valuation, Liverpool is not too generous because Wirtz is worth up to 140 million euros.
However, a club as famously austere as Liverpool rarely makes such blockbuster deals. This is the first time they have spent more than 100 million euros on a player.
In the past 10 seasons, Liverpool ranked only 5th in English football in terms of spending on the transfer market, with 1.27 billion euros spent, far behind the top team Chelsea (2.46 billion euros).
Many fans are concerned about Wirtz's injury history. Despite being only 22 years old, he has a long list of injuries, with at least 10 of them ranging in severity.
The most notable injury was a torn ACL in the 2021-2022 season, which kept Wirtz out for nearly nine months. Since then, Wirtz has suffered seven other injuries, most of which were minor, including a ligament injury that kept him out for two games last season.
However, Wirtz's attacking stats are enough to make any big team swoon. In the past two years, he has scored 32 goals and assisted 33 goals for Leverkusen. This small player plays the role of conductor for both Leverkusen and the German national team.
