Quy Nhon Port transforms towards a green port

(GLO)- Implementing Decision No. 710/QD-CHHVN dated June 2, 2021 of the Vietnam Maritime Administration on the plan to implement the Green Port Development Project in Vietnam, Quy Nhon Port is one of the pioneering units to gradually realize the green port - sustainable port model.

* Sir, how is the construction of a green port being carried out at Quy Nhon Port?

- We clearly identify that the transition to a green port model is not only to fulfill the tasks required by the Vietnam Maritime Administration, but also an inevitable sustainable development trend for the benefit of enterprises. Quy Nhon Port has built 3 strategic orientations: First is to shift from "in-depth growth" to "green and sustainable growth"; second is to increase equipment efficiency, reduce emissions; third is to apply modern technology, towards "digital port - green port".

We are investing in building a Smart Port management system, including investing in a Smart Port Management System, artificial intelligence (AI) in forecasting and optimizing operations, applying the Internet of Things (IoT) to monitor people, equipment and the environment; gradually having comprehensive automation solutions to improve efficiency and minimize errors due to human factors; operating security with AI with more than 400 surveillance cameras.

* During the implementation process, the criterion of "action and implementation" accounts for the largest proportion (50%), how has the Port specified this criterion?

- We are implementing many synchronous items: Using solar LED lights for internal routes, installing solar panels on forklifts; providing shore power for equipment and ships docking at the port. The port has converted 2 Gottwald cranes from diesel to electric and will continue to apply it to RTG cranes in the near future. In particular, this year, we will put into use 2 rotating cranes that use completely shore power.

Regarding energy saving, the Port has installed inverters, soft starter systems, and optimized operations through real-time data systems. We are promoting the application of “paperless offices”, integrating TOS, Eport operating software and online payments throughout the system.

Regarding automation, the Port has applied the EDI system, VASSCM electronic customs connection, digital reporting, mobile app to support customers, drivers, transportation services and shipping lines.

* So what results has Quy Nhon Port achieved in terms of the criteria of "effectiveness and efficiency", sir?

- We have implemented a number of solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve operational efficiency. For example, replacing the entire high-pressure lighting system with LED lights at the container yard, planting trees to create isolation belts, and changing the method of transporting goods to limit dust and spillage.

Quy Nhon Port also requires ships entering the Port to use 0.5% LSFO fuel, and encourages customers to use electric vehicles. We are testing rooftop solar power for the office area, and at the same time building a centralized domestic wastewater treatment system and a waste storage area that meets standards.

* What are the advantages and difficulties of Quy Nhon Port in the process of implementing the green port model?

- The Port's leadership always attaches importance to green development, so it has proactively built a strategy, roadmap and clearly allocated budget for investment in green transport infrastructure and equipment: 335 billion VND in 2023; 251 billion VND in 2024; expected to be about 300 billion VND in 2025. In addition, the Port has a solid technology platform, infrastructure, IT human resources, and VIMC 's ISO and SOP management system, so implementation is more convenient.

Environmental awareness among employees is also enhanced through internal communications and regular training. Furthermore, pressure from customers and international shipping lines on environmental standards is also a driving force for faster transformation.

Regarding difficulties, the funding for investment in conversion is very large, while businesses are still under pressure to maintain output and profits. The land area of the Port is small and square, so it also limits the implementation of zero-emission transportation services such as electric vehicles or robots.

Another problem is the lack of specialized personnel with in-depth knowledge of green standards and technology. In addition, automation means cutting down on manual labor, affecting social security policies.

* With the current steps, how do you evaluate Quy Nhon Port's ability to achieve green port certification in the near future?

- I believe that if we continue to maintain the current pace of investment and technological innovation, Quy Nhon Port will meet the criteria to be recognized as a green port in the coming period. We are not only aiming for certification, but also building the image of a friendly, modern Port, meeting the requirements of international integration and enhancing competitiveness in the Central Highlands region.

* Thank you!
