Canada is one of eight NATO members that falls short of the alliance's target of spending at least 2% of GDP on defense, but has pledged to reach that goal by 2032.

According to Mr. Trudeau, Ottawa has added 175 billion CAD to the spending target.

Canada's updated defence policy forecasts spending will increase from 1.37 per cent of GDP currently to 1.76 per cent by 2030.

Earlier, Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair affirmed the country's commitment to achieving NATO's goal, saying that "the 2% target has been agreed," but to achieve it, Ottawa needs better support and cooperation from allies and stakeholders.
