From walking in caves and deep forests, to studying diligently in the lecture hall, and wearing the new bachelor's gown. That is the journey of Ho Thai Duong. He works for Oxalis - a famous brand with adventure tourism programs that attract many domestic and foreign tourists. In 2010, Son Doong Cave was announced as the largest cave in the world, which was also the time when Duong started working as a porter (carrying equipment for research teams and filmmakers).
The 9X guy realized that he had a passion for nature, especially the majestic scenery right in his hometown, but to make a living, he had to leave home to work. However, every piece of mountain and forest memory, the passion for exploring beautiful caves still lingered in Duong's mind. In 2015, when he heard that Oxalis was recruiting, he immediately returned to join the army.
Nearly 3 years of studying at Saigon College of Tourism have equipped Thai Duong (left) with many valuable assets with positive changes in work and life.
With his love for the job, Duong gradually made progress in his work. However, he knew that he could make a deep impression if he had more knowledge. Luck smiled on him when he and 11 porters and safety assistants of cave exploration tours were given the opportunity by the company to study at Saigon Tourism College.
Investing in local people's knowledge is a sustainable way to develop tourism, not only in Quang Binh but also in the journey to beautify the image of Vietnamese tourism.
Because of the long period of interruption with books, Duong encountered many difficulties in learning in the first days of class. However, he was not discouraged. The teachers were patient and dedicated; the classmates were young, dynamic and enthusiastic, helping Duong to be more inspired to study. The company and family encouraged and created conditions for Duong to excel. "I was lucky to receive a lot of support, so I never thought of giving up" - Duong said. Three years of studying with all the efforts have brought sweet results. Recently, Duong and 11 colleagues officially graduated.
Mr. Ho Thai Duong (second from left) and his friends took a souvenir photo with the Board of Directors of Saigon College of Tourism and representatives of Oxalis company.
Duong emotionally said: "From being a porter to holding an international tour guide certificate, for me it is a meaningful journey." Professional knowledge, professional skills, service spirit... become a solid foundation for him to be more confident when accompanying tourists from all over the world. According to him, it is never too late to learn and understand more about the profession. "In addition to passion and experience, being properly trained helps each person do better and contribute more value to their homeland" - Duong emphasized.
