TPO – Regarding the landslide on National Highway 80 in Can Tho, the Ministry of Transport has directed the design consultant to conduct geological and hydrological surveys to design a solid project, prepare for construction, and is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
The information has just been provided by the Ministry of Transport (MOT) in response to the petition of voters of Can Tho City regarding the early remediation of landslides on National Highway 80 (QL80), through Thot Not District, Can Tho City.

According to the Ministry of Transport , the section of National Highway 80 from Nga Ba Dinh Bridge, near the intersection with National Highway 91 (Lo Te intersection - PV) with a length of about 2km, belonging to the Investment Project to build the route connecting National Highway 91 and the Long Xuyen City bypass, has been approved by the Minister of Transport and assigned to the My Thuan Project Management Board as the investor.
This section of the route was renovated and the road surface was reinforced within the existing roadbed and surface and was completed in February 2024. During the process of waiting for handover and operation, a landslide occurred on the roadbed, with a length of about 42m.
This landslide section is the section running along Cai San River (before diverting to Hau River), the last section of the river with complex hydrological and flow regimes, weak geology, therefore, the roadbed in this area is unstable.
Immediately after the landslide occurred, the Ministry of Transport directed the My Thuan Project Management Board to coordinate with relevant local agencies to immediately implement temporary solutions to ensure normal traffic in both directions on National Highway 80.
The Ministry of Transport has also directed the design consultant to conduct a geological survey of the project and hydrological conditions to design a solid project. Up to now, the appraisal and approval have been completed and the construction is being prepared, expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of this year.
As reported, the landslide occurred on the morning of May 30. This is a vital route connecting Lo Te intersection to Rach Gia (Kien Giang) and up to Vam Cong bridge to Dong Thap or turning onto Lo Te - Rach Soi route. Therefore, the traffic volume is very high, the landslide led to a prolonged traffic jam.
Previously, in February this year, the above area had a phenomenon of subsidence and cracking, with a length of 10m, 3m wide, causing the road embankment and the stone embankment to collapse, cracking close to the roadside. In May, the My Thuan Project Management Board selected a contractor to build an anti-erosion embankment at the above location. During the construction, the incident occurred.
