With more than 2 sao of garden land, in previous years, Mr. Nguyen Van Tao's family (in Quy Phuoc village, Binh Quy) mainly grew beans, sesame... however, the economic efficiency was not high because it depended on productivity and market prices. From information sources received from newspapers and radio and visiting some fruit tree growing models in and outside the locality, in the past 5 years, Mr. Tao has converted the area to growing fruit trees.

Initially, he planted more than 20 Vinh orange trees, bought from a reputable nursery in Nghe An province. After 2 years of care, the Vinh orange trees were harvested, with a fairly high yield, each tree yielding about 30kg of fruit or more. With a selling price ranging from 25,000 VND to 30,000 VND/kg, Mr. Tao has a stable income. Mr. Nguyen Van Tao said that this garden used to grow 2 crops of peanuts and sesame each year, which was both labor-intensive and inefficient. Now, switching to growing Vinh orange trees has a higher economic efficiency.

“Growing oranges only requires fertilizing once a year, and watering once a week in the hot sun. It doesn’t take much work, so it’s suitable for the elderly; in addition, Vinh orange trees are suitable for sandy loam soil, so they produce a lot of fruit,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Tao.

Realizing that Vinh orange trees grow well on the sandy loam soil of his garden, along with the state's support fund according to Resolution 35 of the People's Council of Quang Nam province on developing garden economy and farm economy of nearly 30 million VND, Mr. Tao continued to renovate, level the ground, build a water pump well and plant 50 more guava and tangerine trees; now they are yielding harvests, creating a stable economy for him and his wife in their old age.

Supported with 5 million VND to renovate his garden, Mr. Nguyen Hong Anh (Quy Phuoc village, Binh Quy) invested more money to buy seedlings, converting more than 3 sao of garden land from growing annual crops to planting 300 Taiwanese pear guava trees. Currently, Mr. Nguyen Hong Anh's guava garden is more than 3 years old and is ready for harvest.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Anh said that growing peanuts requires a lot of care and is not very profitable. Since switching to growing guava trees, the care and harvest have been better and the fruit is sold as soon as it arrives.

“Many traders come to my house to place orders when the guava is still green. The buying and selling price is stable at 20,000 to 25,000 VND/kg, so I find growing fruit trees more profitable than growing beans or sesame,” said Mr. Nguyen Hong Anh.

Mr. Dang Tan Duc - Chairman of Binh Quy Commune People's Committee (Thang Binh) said that along with encouraging the conversion of suitable crops, the locality also guides people to access support capital sources from national target programs on new rural construction (NTM), capital of Resolution 35 of the Provincial People's Council on supporting the development of garden economy and farm economy to encourage people to convert from growing short-term crops to growing fruit trees, for higher economic efficiency.

From 2022 to present, the whole commune has 59 households registered to convert, after verification, 7 households with an area of nearly 2 hectares met the requirements and were supported with nearly 285 million VND to develop the garden economy; 11 households with an area of more than 1.5 hectares had their support plan approved by the People's Committee of Thang Binh district.

“When supported, households invested in making beautiful gardens, both creating a fresh living space and increasing income for people. In the coming time, the locality will continue to encourage garden owners to continue investing in expanding and diversifying crops with high economic value; at the same time, guide garden owners to organize and arrange gardens reasonably, ensuring aesthetics, in order to improve people's lives and income, striving to build Binh Quy commune to meet the standards of an advanced NTM commune by 2025" - said Mr. Dang Tan Duc, Chairman of Binh Quy Commune People's Committee.
