The Great Pyramid of Egypt is about 4,500 years old. Ancient Greeks once passed down the story that this magnificent structure was built by 100,000 slaves working in 3-month shifts for 20 years. However, new discoveries inside the Great Pyramid have revealed a completely different truth: that this structure was built by skilled, paid laborers who worked continuously and took a day off every 10 days. Egyptologist Dr Zahi Hawass and his team recently explored a series of narrow chambers above the King's Chamber in the Great Pyramid using imaging technology and discovered previously unknown traces left by work crews. Inside the tombs were statues depicting stone-carrying laborers and 21 hieroglyphic titles such as “supervisor of the pyramid side” and “craftsman.” Photo: Matt Beall Limitless. "These discoveries confirm that the builders were not slaves. If they were slaves, they would never have been buried in the shadow of the pyramid. No one built tombs for slaves to rest in eternal peace like kings and queens," Dr. Hawass said in an episode of the “Matt Beall Limitless” podcast. Photo: egypttoursportal.
The latest discovery also sheds light on how the ancient Egyptians built the pyramid using limestone quarried from a quarry about 300m away and transported it using a ramp made of dirt and mud. The remains of this ramp were found on the southwest side of the Great Pyramid. Photo: egypttoursportal. The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest pyramid in Egypt. It was built during the reign of Pharaoh Khufu, who ruled Egypt during the Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. It is one of three pyramids on the Giza plateau, along with the Pyramid of Khafre and the Pyramid of Menkaure. There is also the Sphinx. Photo: egypttoursportal. Prior to this study, in the 19th century, inscriptions were also discovered inside the Great Pyramid, sparking controversy that they were fake inscriptions added hundreds of years after the construction was completed. Archaeologist Hawass said the inscriptions were found in chambers that were difficult and dangerous to access. They were written in a script that only trained Egyptologists could decipher accurately. The possibility of modern forgeries was almost impossible. Experts had to climb up to a height of about 14m and crawl through narrow passages to reach the chambers. Photo: egypttoursportal. Mr. Hawass admits that some European visitors had entered the Great Pyramid and left their names on the stone in the late 18th and 19th centuries. However, the inscriptions found by the research team were clearly much older and were the genuine handwriting of ancient Egyptian workers. Photo: Archie Wong Getty Images.
