Before 1968, Americans had to call individual numbers for each agency such as police, fire or medical , causing delays when problems arose. On July 1, 1968, the 911 phone number officially launched, starting in the state of Alabama as a turning point in emergency telecommunications.
The three digits "911" were chosen because they are easy to remember, easy to dial, and do not match any area or postal codes national. Just a few months later, the first 911 call in US history was made in the city of Haleyville on February 16, 1968.
The 911 system quickly spread across the United States, accompanied by dispatch centers, locating maps, and specialized dispatcher training. Thanks to the integration of GPS technology, cell phones and digital maps, 911 callers can be accurately located in just seconds. Since the early 2000s, the United States has upgraded to E911 and NG911, allowing messages, photos, and data to be sent directly to the operator.
Today, more than 240 million calls to 911 each year are a testament to the importance of these three life-saving numbers to the American people. Readers are invited to watch more videos : Iris scanning tool to verify human identity | VTV24
