According to Japanese news agency Kyodo , at the dialogue, Tokyo and Canberra pledged to raise defense cooperation "to a new level" to respond to the increasingly complicated regional situation.

Speaking at the dialogue, Japanese Foreign Minister Kamikawa Yoko said: "To address the various challenges we are facing, I believe it is extremely important that Tokyo and Canberra continue to strengthen security cooperation and elevate defense relations to a new level."

After the dialogue, Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Richard Marles said the ministers agreed to strengthen cooperation between the two countries' air forces and further develop trilateral cooperation with the US.

Australia will also participate for the first time in the annual joint exercise Orient Shield between the US Army and the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in 2025, he announced.

Earlier, Mr. Marles had a private meeting with Japanese Defense Minister Kihara Minoru, in which the two sides agreed that expanding long-range missile capabilities is necessary to strengthen defense and counterattack power.

Tokyo will continue to work with Canberra to develop the ability to strike enemy bases and provide long-range missiles to Australia, according to a statement from the Japanese Ministry of Defense . Earlier this year, the two countries discussed using the Oceanian country's territory to test Japanese missiles.

During the meeting, Mr. Kihara also proposed that Japan participate in Australia's new warship development project.

Australia has expressed interest in the Northeast Asian nation's destroyer and Tokyo is providing information on the matter, according to Japan's defense minister, although he did not disclose specific details.

In addition, the two ministers confirmed that intelligence, surveillance and joint exercises between the two countries have been carried out under the agreement that took effect since August last year.
