Alcaraz, Sinner revive Federer-Nadal battle. |
The 2025 Wimbledon final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner at 10pm today (July 13) is such a moment. No longer two young talents, they are now symbols of a new generation, a pair of fierce rivals likened to Federer - Nadal of the new decade.
Two worlds , one war
Carlos Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner? Fiery Spain or icy Italy? One is the embodiment of fiery emotions, the other a powerful iceberg. The two are not only excellent tennis players, but also two opposites that attract each other, creating a perfect contrast - the indispensable spice of every legend.
Alcaraz, 22, grew up in the shadow of Rafael Nadal and brings a "bullfighter" spirit to every shot. On the grass of Wimbledon, he is a two-time champion, and has beaten Sinner the last five times.
Sinner, a year older, is a different breed: calm, precise, and surprisingly cool. His game is Federer-esque—smooth, minimalist, yet brutally effective. He hails not from the bustle of Rome, but from San Candido, a mountain town in northern Italy where he has inherited some of the calmness of his Swiss neighbor.
Last month’s Roland Garros final was the first time the two had faced off at a Grand Slam. The result was an epic five-and-a-half-hour match that stretched their technical, mental and physical limits to their absolute limits. Alcaraz came back from two sets down, saved match points, and eventually won.

Today at Wimbledon, they meet again in a second consecutive Grand Slam final. Sinner and Alcaraz become only the second pair in the Open Era to meet in the finals of Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year - after Federer and Nadal in 2006-2008.
Even if either of them wins the upcoming US Open, they will become the first duo since Federer-Nadal to capture all four Grand Slams in two consecutive years.
Men's tennis has been without a truly exciting race for too long after Federer retired, Nadal suffered from constant injuries, and Djokovic gradually declined. The timely appearance of Alcaraz and Sinner is like a shower of rain on a dry land: young, talented, and full of conflicting personalities.
“We are doing great things for tennis,” Alcaraz said frankly. “The goal is to make the sport more attractive, to attract more spectators, and I want to maintain that for the next five to 10 years.”
Sinner was more modest, refusing to compare himself to the legends: “You can’t compare what the ‘Big Three’ (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic) have done for 15 years. But it’s true that we met again in a Grand Slam final. If this continues for a few more years, then we’ll talk about history.”
Equal strength, equal talent - who is more courageous?
Both had their moments at Wimbledon this year. Sinner was nearly eliminated by Dimitrov, only to advance thanks to injury. Alcaraz had to play five sets in the first round against Fognini, and dropped three more en route to the final. But the further they went, the more menacing they became.
Sinner's playing style is reminiscent of the legendary Roger Federer. |
Sinner has the statistical edge, but Alcaraz has “great instincts” – playing at his best against the strongest opponents. A typical example was at Roland Garros, when he made a spectacular comeback from 3-5, 0-40 down in the fourth set. Even though he lost that match, Sinner also erased some doubts about his fitness – he had lost all seven previous matches that had lasted over 3 hours and 50 minutes.
Will the memories of Paris give Alcaraz more confidence? Or will Sinner use them as motivation to reclaim his honor? Alcaraz himself dares not be complacent: “I don’t think I have a psychological advantage. I know this will be a fight to the limit. Hopefully it won’t last five and a half hours like last time – but if it does, I’m ready.”
Regardless of who lifts the trophy, this isn’t just a Wimbledon final, it’s the beginning of a new era. Federer and Nadal defined a generation with epic battles. Now Sinner and Alcaraz are continuing that story, in their own way.
When the first ball is served on Centre Court, the world won't just be waiting for a winner. They'll be witnessing history.
