Overseas Vietnamese midfielder Nam Mi returns to Canada
Midfielder Nguyen Hoang Nam Mi has returned to Canada to continue her studies, after 2 months of adventure with the Vietnamese women's team. Despite her great efforts to compete for a position, Nam Mi has not been able to convince coach Mai Duc Chung to give her a place in the 2026 Asian Cup qualifiers. Nam Mi is one of 4 names that were crossed out before the final list, along with other teammates such as Kim Yen (HCMC) and Thanh Thao (Vietnam Coal and Minerals).
Coach Mai Duc Chung has announced the list of the Vietnamese women's team preparing for the AFF Cup 2025 (held in Hai Phong in August). Once again, Nam Mi is not on the list. The player born in 2005 has not met the professional requirements and also wants to return to complete her studies, before waiting for the opportunity to be called up to the Vietnamese women's team next time.

"The past two months in Vietnam have been an amazing time for me - so many new friends, so many great memories and so many valuable lessons. I'm sad to leave, but there's still so much to learn as a soccer player. It's also time for me to return to Canada to focus on the university season and finish my degree.
Throughout this experience, I have grown to truly love Vietnamese women’s football and sincerely wish the team all the best. I hope the country will continue to support the players, and that more and more people will recognise their efforts and give them the attention they deserve.
Thank you Vietnam! I hope to come back soon!", Nam Mi wrote a "letter" to her fans.
Nam Mi needs to keep trying.
Nam Mi was born in 2003 in Ottawa (Canada), 1.67 m tall. She is a student at the University of Saskatchewan and plays for this school team as a defender and defensive midfielder. In 2024, Nam Mi was honored in the typical team of the Western Canadian school tournament.
Unlike other Vietnamese-American players like Ashley Ton That Tram Anh or Chelsea Le, Nam Mi already has Vietnamese nationality. She completed the naturalization procedure while still in Canada.
Nam Mi is always reminded by the coaching staff to handle the ball more neatly and quickly.

Nam Mi returned to Vietnam in April with a short-term contract with Ho Chi Minh City Women's Club. However, in the match against Wuhan Jiangda in the AFC Champions League semi-finals, Nam Mi was not selected.
The 20-year-old player was called up by coach Mai Duc Chung to try out for the Vietnamese women's team right before the 2026 Asian Cup qualifiers. However, Nam Mi did not make the final list. Coach Mai Duc Chung reminded her to observe quickly, increase her passing speed, and move in sync with her teammates. At the age of 20, Nam Mi has not yet perfected her technical and tactical skills and still needs to work hard.
"I really hope that overseas Vietnamese players will return to contribute to the Vietnam women's team. This is a player who is suitable for the team's expertise. We are very happy that Nam Mi is joining the team. However, because her expertise does not meet the requirements, I have to remove her name from the list," coach Mai Duc Chung shared.
The Vietnamese women's team gathered this afternoon (July 13) at the Vietnam Youth Football Training Center ( Hanoi ) to prepare for the AFF Cup 2025. The last time they participated in this tournament in 2023, the Vietnamese women's team only finished fourth after losing 0-4 to the Philippines in the semi-finals and losing 3-4 to Myanmar in the third-place match.
