(CLO) A magnitude 6.8 earthquake on the morning of January 7 killed at least 126 people in Tibet, China. This is one of the deadliest earthquakes in the country in recent years.

As of late Tuesday, a total of 126 people had been confirmed dead and 188 others injured after a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Dingri County in Southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region on Tuesday morning.

It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in China in recent years, raising concerns about seismic activity in the region.

Rescuers are still braving freezing temperatures to dig through rubble in the search and rescue of survivors after an earthquake rocked a county in the Tibet Autonomous Region.

Earthquakes are common on the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding area, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates collide. This collision not only causes earthquakes but also changes the height of the Himalayan peaks.

In the past, major earthquakes in China have caused severe damage to people and infrastructure. In particular, the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, which measured 7.9 on the Richter scale, killed nearly 90,000 people. The disaster led to a years-long effort to rebuild with better earthquake-resistant materials.

List of recent major earthquakes in China:

May 2008: A 7.9-magnitude earthquake in Sichuan leaves nearly 90,000 people dead or missing.

April 2010: A 7.1-magnitude earthquake in Qinghai killed 2,698 people.

April 2013: A 7.0-magnitude earthquake in Sichuan kills 196 people.

July 2013: A 6.6-magnitude earthquake in Gansu killed 95 people.

August 2014: A 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Yunnan kills 617 people.

September 2022: A 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Sichuan kills 93 people.

December 2023: A 6.2-magnitude earthquake in Gansu and Qinghai kills at least 126 people.

Seismic activity in China continues to pose major challenges in disaster response and ensuring the safety of people living in vulnerable areas.
