Information from Noi Bai International Airport ( Hanoi ) said that on June 19, they received an email from a Taiwanese passenger complaining that they were offered a ride from Noi Bai airport to the center of Hanoi and asked to pay 900,000 VND.
The passenger said this was his first time traveling to Vietnam. After entering Noi Bai airport at 12:30 on June 7, he wanted to use the Grab app to call a car, but a man approached him with the Grab symbol and asked to call a car. The man said he would charge according to the meter, so the passenger followed him.
When arriving at the parking lot, the man showed the Taiwanese visitor the meter screen on the car with the license plate 30H 216.38. When the car left the airport, the visitor was asked to pay the parking fee in addition to the fare, and this time the driver who took the visitor out of the airport was a woman.
The car arrived at the hotel on Hang Bong Street, Hanoi, the driver showed the app to calculate the fare of 700,000 VND and added 200,000 VND for parking. In total, the customer had to pay 900,000 VND.
The Taiwanese tourist claimed that he was cheated and bargained many times but still had to pay 900,000 VND as requested by the driver. The tourist paid and took a photo of the license plate to complain to the Vietnamese authorities.
Receiving the passenger's email, on the same day Noi Bai International Airport sent a dispatch to Noi Bai International Airport Police Station requesting clarification of the incident.
According to information from Noi Bai International Airport, by June 22, Noi Bai International Airport Police Station had completed the verification and responded with the results: the two people who illegally solicited passengers for rides and appropriated money were a couple named NVH (31 years old) and his wife PTT (37 years old), both residing in Soc Son district, Hanoi.
The amount of 900,000 VND that the two people collected from the customer includes: 700,000 VND displayed through a fake application with an interface similar to a technology-based car booking application; 200,000 VND with the reason "fee for two people passing through the toll station".
While the actual fare for the above trip was only about 350,000 VND, plus 17,000 VND for toll booth fees, the total was 367,000 VND. Thus, the amount of money embezzled was 533,000 VND.
The police announced that the couple NVH and PTT have been handled according to the law.
Noi Bai International Airport added that the police are contacting the tourist from Taiwan. If the passenger is still in Vietnam, they will be invited to come to complete the verification and refund procedures. If the passenger has returned to their home country, there will be an appropriate handling plan.
Noi Bai International Airport recommends that passengers absolutely do not use unofficial transportation services, do not accept invitations from strangers in the airport area. Passengers should use official taxi services organized to pick up passengers in designated areas in the airport, and proactively book cars through reputable applications.
