This is an important event of the top regional tournament for women's football in Southeast Asia. The draw ceremony was attended by AFF President - Major General Khiev Sameth and senior AFF officials. On the host country's side, there was the participation of Dr. Tran Quoc Tuan - President of the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF).
Speaking at the ceremony, the AFF President expressed his deep gratitude to the host country Vietnam and its partners for their active support in organizing this tournament.
On the Vietnamese side, Mr. Tran Quoc Tuan affirmed that being trusted to host the tournament is a great honor, and at the same time demonstrates VFF's strong commitment to contributing to promoting the development of women's football in the region.
He emphasized: “Vietnam not only strives to successfully organize the tournament, but also hopes to spread the love of women's football to a large number of fans, especially the young generation of girls, through this sporting event. At the same time, this is also a valuable opportunity to promote the image of a beautiful, friendly and hospitable Vietnam to international friends.”
According to the format, as the host team, the Vietnamese women's team was placed in Group A. The draw results put Vietnam in a group with Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia. Group B includes the Philippines, Myanmar, Australia and Timor-Leste.
Preliminary assessment, Group A is considered to be “easier” than Group B, which gathers many strong opponents such as Australia and the Philippines. However, the real challenge for the Vietnamese team will come from the semi-finals, where it is likely to face one of the two leading teams in Group B. Therefore, the goal of winning Group A is an important task, helping the team avoid facing strong opponents in the knockout round.
The MSIG Serenity Cup™ is an upgraded version of the AFF Women's Championship, which was first held in 2004. With 12 successful tournaments, the tournament has become a playground for the strongest teams in the region, bringing many eye-catching matches with high professional quality.
In the history of the tournament, Thailand is the most successful team with 4 championships (2011, 2015, 2016, 2018), although they have finished second twice - including a regrettable 0-1 loss to Vietnam in the 2019 final after extra time.
The Vietnamese women's team has won the cup three times in 2006, 2012 and 2019. Myanmar has won twice. Australia and the guest team U23 Japan each have one championship. Notably, the Philippines wrote a fairy tale when they won the championship for the first time in 2022 with a 3-0 victory over Thailand at home.
The MSIG Serenity Cup™ is currently one of the four highest-level tournaments in the AFF official competition system, alongside the ASEAN Hyundai Cup™, ASEAN Club Championship – Shopee Cup™ and ASEAN U-23 Mandiri Cup™ 2025, forming a football ecosystem under the ASEAN United FC brand.
Notably, 2025 marks the first time the tournament will have a qualifying round. The three teams with the highest achievements at the AFF Women's Cup 2024 will qualify for the final round alongside the seeded teams: Australia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and host Vietnam.
The AFF Women's Cup qualifiers will be held in Laos from 23 November to 5 December 2024. In the decisive match, Indonesia defeated Cambodia 3-1 to top the group, with both teams qualifying for the finals. Timor-Leste – the fourth-placed team – also qualified after Singapore (third-placed) withdrew from the tournament.
By gathering the best representatives of women's football in the region, MSIG Serenity Cup™ 2025 promises to continue to be an attractive playground, contributing to raising the position of Southeast Asian women's football on the continental and international sports map.
The ASEAN Women's MSIG Serenity Cup™ 2025 will be held in Vietnam from 6-19 August and is expected to be the most competitive yet, with teams from countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines and Australia - all of whom have qualified for the FIFA Women's World Cup.
