In his opening remarks, Politburo Standing Committee member and Secretary of the Secretariat of the Communist Party of China Central Committee Cai Qi stressed that as the world is undergoing unprecedented changes, people across countries are increasingly calling for peace, development and cooperation. However, rhetoric such as “civilizational barriers,” “civilizational clashes,” and “civilizational superiority” still resurface from time to time.

Maintaining the diversity of civilizations and promoting world peace and development still has a long way to go.

Facing a new historical crossroads, countries and regions must jointly explore diverse development paths and continuously enrich the forms of human civilization; must jointly strengthen cultural inheritance and innovation, and actively promote the protection of cultural heritage and the development of cultural activities; must jointly strengthen cultural exchanges between countries and strive to create an atmosphere of mutual exchange and learning for harmonious coexistence; must jointly strengthen the construction of platforms and mechanisms, and promote the establishment of a diverse global network of dialogue and cooperation in civilization.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, former Indonesian President Megawati, former Namibian President Mbumba, former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and former Belgian Prime Minister Leterme..., said that respecting the diversity of civilizations and promoting world peace and development are central issues related to the future and destiny of mankind. The Global Civilization Initiative has brought stability and certainty to the world. All countries should continue to light the torch of civilization through frank exchanges, mutual learning and mutual consultation, and together create a better future.
