Orchids and ornamental plants are the main agricultural products of Ho Chi Minh City.

On January 12, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ho Chi Minh City held a conference to summarize 2023 and deploy the plan for 2024. According to the report, the agricultural sector of Ho Chi Minh City has many urban agricultural production models with high economic efficiency. If traditional rice cultivation has an average value of 70 - 75 million VND/ha/year, profit of 18 - 20 million VND/ha/year, then key products will have higher profits, typically: leafy vegetables (malabar spinach, sweet cabbage, green cabbage, water spinach ...) profit of about 805 million VND/year/ha, vegetables and fruits (cucumber, bitter melon, squash, green squash ...) profit of about 365 million VND/year/ha, Mokara orchid production: profit of about 126 million VND/ 1,000m2 /5 years, Dendrobium orchid production: profit of about 122 million VND/ 1,000m2 /year; Dairy farming: profit 103 million VND/household/year, brackish water shrimp (intensive shrimp farming model applying high technology) average profit 1,081 million VND/ha/year...

Ornamental fish farming is a potential high-income profession in Ho Chi Minh City.

Currently, the proportion of GRDP in the agricultural sector is not high compared to GRDP of Ho Chi Minh City in 2023 and the trend of agricultural production land is decreasing. However, the future of agriculture will still play a very important role in the socio-economic development of the city. In addition to creating jobs and stable income for the workforce, the agricultural sector is also a place to provide essential fresh agricultural and aquatic products such as vegetables, flowers, ornamental plants, meat, eggs, milk and seafood for the inner city area, more importantly, research, production and supply of new high-quality varieties, advanced and modern techniques and technologies for the city and localities in the country and internationally; create green spaces to serve the needs of rest, sightseeing, study, recreation, entertainment of city residents and tourists , especially people in the inner city area; maintain ecological balance and minimize negative impacts caused by urbanization and climate change.

Mr. Dinh Minh Hiep, Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Ho Chi Minh City, analyzed: "The difficulty of the agricultural sector of Ho Chi Minh City is the rapid urbanization process, the city's agricultural land is divided and fragmented. Small-scale agricultural production is a major obstacle to the development of high-tech agriculture. In addition, high-tech agriculture requires large investment capital for infrastructure construction, production investment, plant and animal varieties, worker training, product consumption, finding land to build projects... so businesses are not bold enough to invest. In reality, VietGAP-certified vegetable and fruit products at individual farming households have difficulty in consumption through contracts, the selling price of VietGAP products compared to products produced by traditional methods is not much different".

Speaking at the conference, Mr. Vo Van Hoan, Vice Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, clearly stated that in the coming time, Ho Chi Minh City will continue to increase the rate of application of high technology and biotechnology in production; strive to develop high-tech agriculture and biotechnology to an advanced level, becoming one of the leading cities in Asia in high-tech agriculture and biotechnology.
