Proud of the first journalism school

Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School was established on April 4, 1949, named by Uncle Ho. At that time, journalist Do Duc Duc, Deputy Secretary of the Viet Minh General Department, held the position of Director, journalist Xuan Thuy was Deputy Director. Journalists Nhu Phong, Do Phon, and Tu Mo were members of the Board of Directors. This was the first journalism training facility of our country's revolutionary press. Amidst the countless difficulties of the resistance war against France, in the great mountains and forests of Viet Bac, a class was opened with 29 lecturers and 42 students with the aim of building a team of journalists to inform the revolution. The direct lecturers were famous political activists, journalists, and artists such as Truong Chinh, Vo Nguyen Giap, Hoang Quoc Viet, Le Quang Dao, To Huu, Tran Huy Lieu, Tu Mo, Xuan Dieu, Nguyen Xuan Khoat, Nguyen Huy Tuong, The Lu, Nguyen Tuan, Nguyen Dinh Thi, Nam Cao...

Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School had only the first and only class, which closed on July 6, 1949. Although it only operated for more than 3 months, the students were taught thoroughly and systematically how to write editorials, commentaries, reflections, how to write prose, write plays... This place trained famous "writers" of Vietnam such as Thep Moi, Chinh Yen, Tran Kien, Mai Thanh Hai, Mai Ho, writer Huu Mai, poet Hai Nhu... From the bamboo and thatched roof school in the middle of the Viet Bac forest, the students spread out in all directions, appeared in the fiercest battlefields, actively participated in the difficult information front, and contributed to the glorious history of the 100-year journey of Vietnam's revolutionary press. Many of them later became prominent names in the literary, journalistic, film and fine arts worlds.

According to the President of the Vietnam Journalists Association, Le Quoc Minh, the establishment of the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School is a special milestone in the history of revolutionary journalism in our country. From that simple school, the first journalism class contributed to shaping the qualities, bravery, and capacity of many famous journalists, making great contributions to the cause of resistance and national unification, becoming "precious bricks" that built a solid foundation for Vietnam's revolutionary journalism.

"Red address" attracts tourists

On March 28, 2019, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism decided to rank the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School as a National Historical Relic. In 2024, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School and the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, with the desire to effectively exploit and promote the great historical values of the relic, the Vietnam Journalists Association coordinated with the People's Committee of Thai Nguyen province to implement the project of restoring and embellishing the National Monument of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School in Tan Thai commune, Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen province.

After 7 months of implementation, the relic was completed in the excitement and pride of journalists nationwide. In addition to the monument stele erected in 2019, the restoration project includes the following items: an 80m2 exhibition house, considered a miniature museum of Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School; a stilt house modeled after the stilt house of the Viet Minh Headquarters, displaying content about the Viet Bac War Zone Press 1946 - 1954. In addition, the project also includes other items such as a bas-relief with 48 portraits of the school's Board of Directors, lecturers and students; a conference and seminar hall with a capacity of over 150 people; 200m2 square for event organization... Journalist Tran Thi Kim Hoa, former head of the Vietnam Press Museum, who directly participated in the project, shared that during the project implementation, the staff of the Press Museum spent a lot of time collecting documents, artifacts, and images from historical witnesses and veteran journalists to supplement valuable sources of documents for restoration and display.

Currently, this place has become an attractive location, contributing to enriching the system of "red addresses" in Thai Nguyen province. According to the Relic Management Board, many activities have taken place here to "return to the source" and show gratitude to journalists such as the program "Media, practical experience: History and heritage of Vietnam's revolutionary press"... On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day, the Huynh Thuc Khang Journalism School Relic Site welcomed many delegations of press agencies and tourists to visit and review the tradition.

Currently, the Vietnam Journalists Association is coordinating with Thai Nguyen province to organize propaganda and promotional activities to turn this place into not only a "red address" for traditional education for journalists but also an attractive tourist destination. Chairman of the Vietnam Journalists Association Le Quoc Minh suggested that in the coming time, the units need to organize more events, cooperate with travel agencies to form meaningful origin tourism routes, experience culture and explore the beauty of the "Windy Capital"...
