With a long coastline and favorable climate conditions, Quang Ninh has great potential for developing aquaculture, including shrimp farming. On that basis, the province has proactively reoriented its production structure, identifying two key national farming species: white-leg shrimp and black tiger shrimp, concentrated in coastal areas - where there is favorable area and conditions for shrimp farming.
According to data from the Department of Sea, Islands and Fisheries, Fisheries Surveillance (Department of Agriculture and Environment), as of June 2025, the whole province has about 2,250 shrimp farming facilities, mainly distributed in coastal localities. In the context of climate change, promoting the application of science and technology in the entire production process has contributed to increasing productivity, reducing costs, while still ensuring biosafety.
Notably, farming models in Quang Ninh have shifted strongly from improved extensive farming to intensive and super-intensive farming, applying high technology and being environmentally friendly. Thanks to that, the average shrimp yield has reached more than 10 tons/ha/crop, many models have reached 25-30 tons/ha/crop, bringing stable income to farming households and businesses.
To solve the problems of environment, disease, cost and productivity in shrimp farming, Quang Ninh has pioneered in promoting the application of scientific and technological advances in the entire production chain. One of the breakthroughs is the implementation of the closed recirculating aquaculture model (RAS) - a modern technology that allows controlling the pond environment such as temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, etc. through sensors connected to the Internet (IoT). At the same time, technologies such as biofloc - using microorganisms to treat waste in the pond, automatic feeding according to sensors, AI software to warn the environment, are being widely deployed.
A key factor that helps Quang Ninh create a competitive advantage is the ability to proactively produce high-quality shrimp seeds, suitable for the climate conditions of the North. Viet Uc - Quang Ninh Company Limited is a pioneer in this field when investing in building a high-tech shrimp seed production complex in Dam Ha district, with a capacity of 8 billion seeds/year; an international standard automatic water filtration and testing system helps to strictly control seed quality.
The company has successfully researched, selected and bred cold-resistant parent shrimp that can thrive in the winter conditions of the North. This not only helps shrimp farmers maintain year-round production, without “hibernation”, but also saves costs and increases the production cycle.
Aiming for sustainable and modern development, Quang Ninh is promoting digital transformation in the aquaculture sector. As of June 2025, the province has issued 532 certificates of registration for aquaculture and is attaching electronic identification codes to each facility. Building an electronic database for the shrimp farming industry has helped trace origins, monitor diseases, support statistics and information transparency, and is the basis for building the "Quang Ninh Clean Shrimp" brand in the market.
Quang Ninh is also building an organic shrimp farming model, developing a closed value chain from breeds, feed, farming, harvesting, to consumption. Some large enterprises are cooperating with farmers in the "input - output" model: Enterprises provide breeds and technology, and consume products; farmers operate according to standard processes. This is a direction to help control quality synchronously, improve production efficiency and commercial value.
According to the Project on developing key agricultural product chains in Quang Ninh province for the period 2022-2025, with a vision to 2030, the shrimp farming industry will develop in a high-tech direction, in which over 50% of the output will be raised using circular or semi-circular technology. All facilities will be identified, traceable, and ensure that they meet the conditions for export to demanding markets such as the EU, Japan, and the United States.
With the determination of local authorities, the active participation of businesses and people, along with the development orientation based on science and technology and digitalization, the shrimp farming industry of Quang Ninh is gradually affirming its leading position in the Northern region and moving towards the goal of developing sustainable, modern agriculture , adapting to climate change in the era of industry 4.0.
