South Korean President's approval rating hits record low

(CLO) A survey showed that President Yoon Suk Yeol's approval rating fell to a record low of 11% on December 13, amid strong public reaction to his declaration of martial law last week.

According to a survey conducted by Gallup Korea of 1,002 adults aged 18 and older from December 10 to 12, the positive rating of Mr. Yoon's work performance fell 5 percentage points from the previous week to 11%, the lowest level since he took office in May 2022.

Negative ratings for Mr. Yoon rose to a record high of 85%, with 49% of survey respondents citing martial law and 8% citing concerns about the economic situation.

Regarding the possibility of impeaching President Yoon, 75% of respondents supported it, while 21% opposed it. The National Assembly will vote to impeach Mr. Yoon for his failed attempt to impose martial law on December 14.

Among supporters of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), 27% supported impeachment, while 66% opposed it. In contrast, 97% of supporters of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) agreed with impeachment.

Support for the PPP fell 3 percentage points from last week to 24%, while support for the main opposition DP increased 3 percentage points to 40%. This is the largest gap in support for the DP over the PPP since the current government came to power.

The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points, with a 95% confidence level.
