Hoan Kiem is one of the central core districts of Hanoi Capital, where the density of cultural heritage is highest in the city and is a typical land bearing the cultural identity of Thang Long - Hanoi.

Hanoi Old Quarter – with 36 streets – is considered a “living museum” of the formation and development of Thang Long citadel. The ancient houses, unique architecture, the system of temples – pagodas – shrines – communal houses, along with the lifestyle and traditional customs of the residents associated with many ancient craft villages have contributed to creating the unique cultural identity of this land.
This area not only clearly reflects the geographical conditions, living conditions and beliefs of the ancient Hanoi people, but is also a place where many Eastern and Western cultures intersect, making it an attractive destination for domestic and foreign tourists.
Hoan Kiem has hundreds of historical and cultural relics such as communal houses, pagodas, temples, shrines and typical revolutionary relics, such as: 48 Hang Ngang relic - where President Ho Chi Minh wrote the Declaration of Independence, the heritage house at 87 Ma May, Dong Lac communal house at 38 Hang Dao, Bach Ma temple at 76 Hang Buom, Kim Ngan communal house at 42-44 Hang Bac...
Hoan Kiem is also a locality with a rich and unique system of intangible cultural heritage. Many typical traditional art forms such as ca tru, hat xam, hat van... are still preserved, restored and spread in contemporary life.
In particular, ca tru and hat xam have been recognized by UNESCO as representative intangible cultural heritage of humanity, contributing to affirming the position of Hoan Kiem on the national and international cultural map.
The system of traditional festivals such as Bach Ma Temple Festival, Old Quarter Mid-Autumn Festival, Gold and Jewelry Festival, King Le Coronation Festival... are held annually with many scales and diverse forms, reflecting the depth of beliefs, spirituality and strong community spirit of the residents of the Old Quarter.
The living space of Hoan Kiem people also bears a strong cultural imprint, expressed through daily activities such as folk art performances on walking streets, unique street food, traditional street corners associated with ancient craft villages... creating a vibrant cultural complex, where the past and present blend in every way of life.
In particular, the Hoan Kiem Old Quarter with 36 streets used to be the busiest commercial center in the capital, famous for its traditional craft streets (such as Hang Bac, Hang Gai, Hang Thiec, Hang Ma, etc.), which not only preserves economic and commercial values but also clearly reflects the traditional urban structure and civilized urban lifestyle of the ancient Hanoians.
“It is the harmonious combination of tangible and intangible heritage, tradition and modernity, historical values and daily life that has created the unique appeal and cultural depth of Hoan Kiem – the cultural heart of the thousand-year-old capital…”, Chairman of Hoan Kiem District People’s Committee Pham Tuan Long emphasized.
Over the past years, Hoan Kiem district has proactively implemented many programs, plans, projects to renovate and improve urban infrastructure; build public cultural spaces; restore and embellish the system of historical and cultural relics; develop cultural and social careers, build a civilized lifestyle, and form the image of elegant, intelligent and responsible Hoan Kiem people; thereby creating a driving force for socio-economic development in the direction of trade - services - tourism.
According to District Chairman Pham Tuan Long, cultural heritage conservation is a specific task, multi-disciplinary and interdisciplinary, related to the fields of history, culture, architecture, society, engineering and modern technology. This is a long-term, elaborate process, requiring close, synchronous and persistent coordination from all levels, sectors and the entire community.
With that deep awareness, the Party, the State and Hanoi City have issued many important policies and guidelines to protect and promote the value of cultural heritage - the spiritual foundation of the nation, serving the cause of building an advanced culture imbued with national identity.
“In the process of carrying out this task, Hoan Kiem district has always received close attention from the city authorities at all levels, close coordination from departments, branches and sectors; professional support from researchers, experts, artists, artisans; and strong support from the community…”, the district leader said.
The district has set out many priority investment policies, focusing on both human and material resources to preserve and promote heritage values in conjunction with the local sustainable development strategy. Activities include: restoration, embellishment, reconstruction, digitization, documentation, honoring artisans, promoting images, as well as organizing many cultural and artistic events to spread heritage values to the general public and tourists.
On the occasion of the 64th anniversary of the founding of Hoan Kiem district and major political and cultural events of the capital and the country in 2025, Hoan Kiem district organized a ceremony to honor organizations and individuals who have made valuable contributions to the work of preserving, promoting and disseminating the values of cultural heritage in the area.
