On June 4, Indonesian President Joko Widodo sent his greetings on the occasion of Vesak - also known as Buddha's birthday - to all Buddhists and prayed for the happiness of all sentient beings.

On his Instagram account, President Joko wrote: "I send my greetings to all Buddhists on the occasion of Vesak. May all beings be happy and peaceful."

On Buddha's birthday this year, monks from many countries made a pilgrimage called "Thudong" by walking to Borobudur Temple in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia.

“Thudong” is a ritual performed by monks, which involves walking long distances, often up to 1,000km, to imitate the Buddha.

The monks on the pilgrimage arrived at Borobudur on May 31. They were warmly welcomed by local people throughout their journey in Indonesia.

A photo illustrating the journey of Buddhist monks to Borobudur Temple and the hospitality of the people towards them accompanied President Joko's remarks posted on social media.

On the morning of June 4, Buddhists participated in a walking procession from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple to celebrate Vesak. They carried a holy fire taken from the Mrapen site in Grobogan district, Central Java, and holy water from Umbul Jumprit site in Temanggung district, also in Central Java.

According to the head of the executive committee of the Indonesian Buddhist Council (Walubi), S. Hartati Murdaya, the holy fire symbolizes energy and life while the water symbolizes humility, purity and serenity.

Besides holy water and holy fire, red and white flags and crops such as rice, vegetables and fruits are also brought to Borobudur Temple during the procession./.
