The latest vote count shows that President-elect Donald Trump won the popular vote by the smallest margin since the 19th century, not the 'overwhelming' victory he had claimed.

Although some votes are still pending, The New York Times ' figures show that President-elect Donald Trump won 49.997% of the popular vote as of the morning of November 22 (Vietnam time). This number means that he did not achieve the majority of votes as high as initially felt.

Other figures from CNN and other outlets show that Mr. Trump won the popular vote with 49.9%. This puts the gap between him and Vice President Kamala Harris at about 1.6%, the third-lowest since 1888 and could eventually close to about 1.5%.

"If the definition of a landslide is when you win both the popular vote and the electoral vote, that's a new definition," The New York Times quoted professor Lynn Vavreck of the University of California at Los Angeles.

Trump will declare a state of emergency and use the military to deport illegal immigrants.

According to the professor, the victory that Mr. Trump achieved cannot be called overwhelming or resounding.

Truly overwhelming victories include Lyndon B. Johnson's victory in 1964 with 22.6% of the popular vote; Richard M. Nixon's in 1972 with 23.2%; and Ronald Reagan's in 1984 with 18.2%.

In the 40 years since Reagan's victory, no US president has won the popular vote by double digits.

However, this year is the first time Mr. Trump won the popular vote after 3 elections, and is also the first Republican candidate to win this victory in 20 years.

Mr. Trump's 1.6% margin of victory was smaller than that of every president-elect since 1888, except for John F. Kennedy in 1960 and Richard M. Nixon in 1968.

In addition, there are two presidents who won the electoral vote while losing the popular vote: George W. Bush in 2000 and Trump in 2016.
