Promoting gender equality from "family stories"

Families play an important role in promoting gender equality and inclusion, thereby contributing to efforts to ensure gender equality in Vietnam.

The online discussion "Accompanying for Integration: Family is the starting point" aims to promote gender equality.

On the morning of August 17, the Gender Expert Group in collaboration with the Aus4Skills program (part of the Australia-Vietnam Development Cooperation Program) organized an online discussion "Accompanying for Integration: Family is the starting point" with the participation of more than 30 Vietnamese alumni in Australia, friends and relatives.

The discussion session featured speaker Nguyen Bich Phuong - Co-chair of the Gender Expert Group and speaker Hoang Giang Son - Partner Manager of Communications & Community Connection, initiative "Investing in women".

The event highlighted the importance of family in promoting gender equality and inclusion, thereby contributing to efforts to ensure gender equality in Vietnam.

In the Companion 1 section, speaker Bich Phuong analyzed and pointed out gender stereotypes in many different fields such as fashion , journalism or advertising. She emphasized that parents sometimes build gender stereotypes for their children, creating fixed images of gender and putting pressure on them if they do not “follow” these stereotypes.

In the Companion 2 section, speaker Hoang Giang Son had a very close conversation about gender and sexeducation in families.

Speaker Giang Son shared that he is an openly gay man and has learned many important lessons on his journey of coming out, as well as about gender stereotypes in his own family.

Speaker Giang Son shared: "In reality, changing a person is extremely difficult, each person is a combination of experiences. It is necessary to have a realistic view, reduce expectations and be humble to accompany family and people around, instead of forcing and arguing fiercely with them. Each individual should also be tolerant and respect the right to decide of others, and at the same time need to realize that there are many ways to gradually change people's prejudices."

During the talk, the two speakers gave many tips for healing and connecting within the family to overcome gender stereotypes. Attendees felt the closeness and sympathy from the two speakers.

At the end of the talk, the message of the two speakers was once again emphasized: Be gentle, tolerant and steadfast in what you believe in and let the first starting point come from "home" - the most familiar and closest place.
