About 40,000 guests and many famous figures in the film industry will come to Cote d'Azur, southeastern France, to attend the Cannes Film Festival scheduled to take place from May 14 to 25.

Local authorities announced that they will test 17 cameras equipped with AI technology to identify suspicious events or behavior and help detect abandoned packages, weapons and people in distress.

Speaking to reporters, Cannes Mayor David Lisnard said the city hall had requested the deployment of the cameras since 2019.

However, these devices will only be licensed after changes to monitoring laws are introduced for the 2024 Olympics in Paris next July.

He said the city now has the densest network of security cameras in France, with 884 cameras, equivalent to a ratio of 84 residents/1 camera.

Cannes also has 462 emergency call buttons located in public places and buildings.

French authorities said they would send about 400 additional security personnel along with 200 officers and 66 supervisors to Cannes to ensure the event runs smoothly.

In addition, an additional 400 security personnel were deployed around the main venue Palais des Festivals, with many private security personnel deployed at all beach parties, villas and yachts.
