A cooperative's journey from vegetable fields to supermarkets | |
Green agriculture is the inevitable direction |
The price of green vegetables at traditional markets in the province has increased by one and a half times or double compared to two weeks ago. |
In fact, at the province's wholesale markets, we found that the selling price of green vegetables and many types of tubers and fruits has increased by one and a half times or double compared to 2 weeks ago. In particular, some types of green vegetables that are often consumed in large quantities, such as water spinach, have now increased in price to 12-15 thousand VND/bunch; Malabar spinach costs 10-15 thousand VND/bunch; Malabar spinach and jute cost 5 thousand VND/bunch; tubes and fruits such as green squash, sweet gourd, white radish, etc. are also sold at prices ranging from 25 to 30 thousand VND/kg.
According to producers, the price of green vegetables has increased due to recent heavy rains and prolonged, flooding causing many vegetable, root and fruit growing areas to be deeply submerged in water, affecting the productivity, quality and output of vegetables.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Oanh, Dong Bam residential group, Linh Son ward, said: In the recent flood, my family had nearly 1 star of submerged vegetables. In addition to the beds of water spinach and sweet potato leaves that were partly “saved” (but the quality of the vegetables was greatly affected), most of the beds of sweet cabbage and mustard greens were completely ruined. Not only my family, more than 200 vegetable growing households in the village were affected when many vegetable fields planted on the banks of the Cau River were “erased” and could not be harvested.
Similar to Ms. Oanh, Ms. Pham Thi Thanh, Oanh residential group, Phan Dinh Phung ward, also had to sadly watch her family's vegetable fields submerged in water. She shared: The family's trellises for growing water mimosa, bitter melon, sweet melon... that had only climbed less than 1 meter above ground were all damaged. Like last September, after this flood, our farmers suffered significant losses. Currently, only household items with vegetable growing areas on high ground can harvest and sell them at much higher prices than before.
Although the market for green vegetables in the province's markets fluctuates, the price of this item at Minh Cau Supermarket remains stable. |
While the vegetable market in traditional markets and flea markets in the province is showing a strong upward trend, in some supermarkets in the province, vegetables and fruits are still sold at stable prices.
Ms. Tran Thi Duyen, Sales Manager at Minh Cau Supermarket (Minh Cau Street, Phan Dinh Phung Ward), said: For many years, we have only sold vegetables, tubers, and fruits that are produced according to safety standards, VietGAP, have clear origins, are regularly inspected, and ensure food hygiene and safety. Every day, the supermarket supplies the market with several hundred bunches of vegetables and several tons of tubes, fruits, and green vegetables of all kinds. Always concerned with the interests of consumers and maintaining the reputation of the supermarket, no matter how the green vegetable market at the markets fluctuates, the prices of green vegetables, tubers, and fruits here are always stable.
With the current selling price, consumers are not affected too much. However, if the weather changes abnormally and heavy rains continue, the vegetable production activities of people in some specialized vegetable growing areas in the province may be significantly affected.
This is also the time when people need to change their thinking and farming methods, bringing science and technology into production to cope with climate change.
Mr. Nguyen Ta, Head of the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, said: In the immediate future, people in specialized vegetable growing areas of the province need to clear the flow of water to allow water to drain quickly; urgently clean the fields and prepare the soil to sow and grow short-term vegetables. It is expected that in just 2 to 3 weeks, the green vegetable market will stabilize again when the short-term vegetables are harvested. In the long term, people need to apply high technology to vegetable production, especially using net houses and membrane houses to protect green vegetable areas; grow hydroponic vegetables; apply organic standards, VietGAP to green vegetable production...
