Agricultural products are sold by Khmer ethnic minorities according to criteria

Every day, farmers have a different “menu”, limited to a few dishes depending on the harvest. Short-term crops are not “delicacies”, but anyone who sets foot in the mountainous region wants to enjoy them. Familiar agricultural products are young su fruit, su shoots, peanuts, sweet potatoes, taro, wild vegetables, bitter vegetables, bamboo shoots, strawberries... Not only for fun, in a corner of Tri Ton market, there are 5-6 bicycles and street vendors selling the above items very early, people buy them for breakfast, just like the majority of people in the West eat to gain energy for the new day.

Production of mountain residents follows the tradition of "following nature", mainly growing crops in the rainy season, the growth and productivity of crops depend on the weather. The fruits and vegetables are also characterized by being small and moderate, with some small potatoes only as big as two fingers... In return, people do not overuse fertilizers or spray pesticides, meeting the criteria of cleanliness, safety and natural deliciousness. "I don't know how to describe it, but vegetables grown naturally or without the care of fertilizers, pesticides... will have a very distinct aroma, like when I was a child eating vegetables and fruits in the home garden" - Mr. Anh Khoa, a resident of Tri Ton shared.

Mountain "specialty" products are available in many markets and urban areas.

In addition to the fixed carts in the market, there are also mobile bicycles selling goods on all the roads, tourist spots, check-in spots... taking advantage of their free days, people take goods from the market to sell cakes and fruits to earn extra income. For passengers from other places, carts selling "specialties" are given priority, from palm fruit, palm juice to custard apple, mango, palm cake... Items that are not for fun, but mainly bought as gifts will be displayed along the road, convenient for passersby to choose, such as: Mang Manh Tong, Mang Tam Vong, chayote, Chuc fruit...

The large output, combined with the increasing demand from buyers from far away, so in addition to supplying on-site, many people have come up with ways to bring agricultural products to the markets of towns and cities to sell. The shoulder poles weaving through the heart of the city cannot be confused with any other product, unique and exuding the hard work of the simple mountain people. The difference in the agricultural poles brought to the city is that the products have been carefully selected by the seller, fresh and delicious, so the buyer does not have to waste time choosing again.

Learning from many people who carry goods to the city, Chau Tren (Tri Ton) said that traveling long distances with his goods can earn an income of 300,000 - 400,000 VND/day. From a person unfamiliar with the city, he is now familiar with every corner and "regular customer" at My Xuyen market, My Quy market, Long Xuyen. On lucky days, before 10 o'clock, his two loads are sold out, he can go home early to rest, and continue preparing goods for the new day; on later days, he can still get home by 4 o'clock in the afternoon. However, he does not go down the mountain every day, but depending on the amount of agricultural products collected, some from his family and some from his neighbors, most of the rest of the time he has to go to the fields to take care of the garden...

At My Binh market, every few days, Neang Sa Tram's family will be there, setting up shop in a small corner selling young jackfruit, tamarind, custard apple, and palm cake. She said that she has been selling here for many years, so many people know her face, and customers also remember her to buy "mountain food". She is willing to travel a long distance, but sells out in the morning. Since she has a phone and knows how to post on Zalo, before each trip she will announce what items are available the next day, and customers will order in advance to buy them. Thanks to her familiarity, even for vegetables and fruits that she does not grow herself, she is willing to ask around the neighborhood to help her customers.

Ms. Thu Thuy, a vendor in My Xuyen market, shared: “The Khmer people in the mountains are very honest and kind, so I “lend” them the corner in front of the yard to sell their goods. Seeing people coming to the market to show their support makes me happy, few people bargain because the people around also help them, they come from Tinh Bien, Tri Ton, it is very hard, the burden is heavy, the road is long, and the transportation fee is expensive…”. Since having a corner to display their goods, the housewives have enjoyed it, gradually getting used to the “specialty” spot where the goods change every few days, not fixed. That image also creates a special feature in the heart of the city with people who work hard to make a living, silently bringing the “specialty” of the Bay Nui region to all the markets.
