Takai made his Tottenham debut. |
Takai, 20, has signed a five-year contract with Spurs, costing the London club around £5m.
This is Tottenham's first contract under new manager Thomas Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou this summer. Takai is expected to bring youth and enthusiasm to the club's defense.
Takai has 4 caps for the Japanese national team and recently attended the 2024 Paris Olympics. He will compete for a starting spot with Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, Radu Dragusin or Kevin Danso.
Last season, Takai also played every J1.League match for Kawasaki Frontale and scored 2 goals. In addition, the 20-year-old center-back also played 9 times in the AFC Champions League.
Before Takai, Kaoru Mitoma was the last Japanese player to make a splash in the Premier League with Brighton. Tottenham's new signing hopes to overcome the pressure and shine in the foggy country like his senior.
In another development, Tottenham will increase their offer to buy West Ham midfielder Mohammed Kudus, after their first bid of £50m was rejected.
