Basketball is one of the key sports that won gold for Vietnamese sports at the 33rd SEA Games.

2025 is a pivotal year for Vietnamese sports with the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand. As the host of the 31st SEA Games and the overall champion of the 32nd SEA Games, the pressure and expectations placed on the Vietnamese sports delegation are not small. In addition, there are many difficulties both objectively and subjectively.

In fact, Vietnamese sports (VS) will face many difficulties at the 33rd SEA Games, especially when the Games are held at the home ground of Thailand - the biggest rival in the region. Along with that, countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and the Philippines are also strong opponents, with thorough investment in facilities, nutrition and training conditions.

Notably, many of Vietnam’s strong sports are not included in the official competition program of this congress, typically Vovinam and Sports Dance. Many events in sports such as Judo, shooting, boxing, Wushu, Taekwondo, aerobics, billiards, Muay, Pencak Silat have also been cut or limited in the number of athletes participating. This is also the biggest challenge for Vietnam’s sports, because this will cause significant difficulties in achieving the medal target set by the Vietnamese sports delegation.

Meanwhile, the goal of Vietnam at this Congress is to strive to be in the top of the entire delegation, winning 80-100 gold medals. Especially hoping to win the first place in the region in some events such as: Athletics, karate, wrestling and improve the ranking in key events such as: Boxing, cycling, swimming, shooting and fencing.

The key sports competing for gold medals at the 33rd SEA Games of Vietnam include traditional strengths such as: Athletics, swimming, shooting, wrestling, taekwondo, karate, weightlifting, fencing, canoeing and traditional boat racing, gymnastics, boxing, judo, jujitsu, petanque, wushu, muay, rowing, cycling, chess, archery, pencak silat, table tennis, aerobics, mixed sports, football, indoor volleyball, golf, handball, 3x3 basketball, and sepak takraw.

Sports with potential for medals are tennis, 5x5 basketball, diving, artistic gymnastics, badminton, beach volleyball, sailing, bowling, roller.

Sports groups competing at the 33rd SEA Games with socialized resources such as billiards, figure skating, e-sports, baseball & softball, MMA can also bring medals to Vietnam at the regional sports festival.

In preparation for the 33rd SEA Games, immediately after the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, the Vietnam Sports Administration directed the review and assessment of the force and prepared professional conditions such as group division and training to improve the level of athletes both at home and abroad. Key teams are heavily invested in expertise and logistics, from nutrition, training equipment to medical care and injury recovery. This creates an exciting atmosphere and reduces pressure on performance for the teams.

It can be seen that the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand at the end of 2025 is not only a regional sporting event but also an important milestone for Vietnam Sports Delegation to affirm its position and continue the successes it has achieved. Although it knows it will face many challenges, with careful and early preparation, the Vietnam Sports Delegation is heading towards the Games with clear goals and the highest determination.

The 33rd SEA Games will take place from December 9 to 20 in Bangkok, Chonburi Province and Songkhla Province (Thailand). At the Games, athletes from 11 countries in the Southeast Asian region will compete in 585 events in 66 sports and sub-sports.
