Lao Cai City recorded 2 cases of rabid dog bites

According to information from Lao Cai City Medical Center, Coc Leu ward has just recorded 2 cases of being bitten by stray dogs, including a 4-year-old child. Test results showed that the animal was positive for rabies virus.

The incident occurred when the 4-year-old boy and his father were playing outside the gate when the boy was bitten on the face, arms and legs by a loose dog, causing deep and bleeding bites. The boy's father was also attacked by the dog, causing injuries to his thigh and lower leg. Immediately after being bitten by the dog, the father and son washed the wounds with soap at home, then went to the vaccination clinic to get anti-rabies serum and vaccine. Currently, the health of both father and son is stable.

The ward veterinary force coordinated with the city's Veterinary Station and the Lao Cai Province Veterinary and Plant Protection Department to collect samples and send them to the Central Veterinary Diagnosis Center for rabies testing, and at the same time, collect the dog carcasses and destroy them according to regulations. The test results on June 17 showed that the sample was positive for rabies virus.

Vaccination against rabies for dogs and cats is the responsibility and obligation of pet owners.

Coc Leu Ward Health Station has coordinated with local units and officials to monitor, verify, propagate, and guide rabies prevention in exposed households; exchanged information with veterinary staff to be provided with information on the status of rabies vaccination for dogs and proposed to organize additional vaccination for dogs that have not been vaccinated against rabies in the ward. In addition, propaganda to residential groups to continue to review, investigate, and verify cases of suspected rabid dog and cat bites.


Since the beginning of the year, Lao Cai city has recorded 379 cases of dog bites and all have been vaccinated against rabies, some cases have received both vaccine and anti-rabies serum. To date, Lao Cai city has not recorded any deaths due to rabies. The city's medical center has prepared enough serum and vaccine to vaccinate cases of suspected rabies dog bites. There are also vaccination centers in the city that provide this vaccine.

Rabies is an acute encephalomyelitis caused by the rabies virus, transmitted from animals to humans mainly through the bite of an infected animal. Currently, there is no specific medicine to treat rabies, however, the disease can be prevented with vaccines and anti-rabies serum.
