Vietnamese summer movies 'inferior' to foreign blockbusters

Of the more than 30 summer movies released this year, Vietnamese films account for about 1/3. It's mid-summer, but it seems Vietnamese films are "exhausted" by the pressure of a series of international blockbusters.

This summer, the Japanese animated film Doraemon: Nobita and the Adventures in the Picture World (released at the end of May and still in theaters) has been a big hit in Vietnamese theaters. The film is currently holding the number 1 position in summer movie revenue, currently reaching 169 billion VND, far surpassing two Vietnamese animated films : Trang Quynh Nhi: The Legend of the Taurus (3.2 billion VND) and De Men: The Adventures to the Swamp Village (21 billion VND). On July 25, another Japanese animated blockbuster that fans are looking forward to will be released in theaters: Detective Conan: Afterimage of the One-Eyed. Meanwhile, Disney's Lilo & Stitch , with a production budget of nearly 100 million USD, is about to reach the 1 billion USD mark globally, with 34.5 billion VND in Vietnam alone.

Premiering at the end of May, Mission: Impossible - The Last Karma of superstar Tom Cruise has a budget of up to 400 million USD, currently reaching a global revenue of 584 million USD, of which 46.7 billion VND in Vietnam alone (according to statistics from the box office revenue analysis website Box Office Vietnam). Besides that, there are Hollywood blockbusters Jurassic World: Rebirth, released on July 4, earning 38.5 billion VND and Superman, which just premiered on July 11, earning 15.4 billion VND. On July 25, there will be another Marvel blockbuster The Fantastic Four: First Step, released in theaters, promising to stir up the box office.

This summer, many Vietnamese horror films were released in theaters, but most of their revenue did not meet expectations, and they had to compete with many foreign works of this genre released at the same time.

The psychological-emotional genre has 3 Vietnamese films shown this summer. Of which, The Last Wish opened on July 4, earning 28.1 billion VND. What are you waiting for, Dream on! almost failed at the box office, earning only 246 million VND since its release on July 11. Currently, expectations are focused on Mang Me Di Bo (a Vietnamese-Korean co-production) which will open on August 1.
