The urgent issue after the merger of Thai Nguyen province is to reshape Ba Be Lake tourism based on a master plan to "awaken" the sleeping green fairy.
The sleeping fairy
Not by chance, Ba Be Lake is likened to a "green fairy". Coming to Ba Be, tourists will admire the immense green of the natural forest of Ba Be National Park and the immense blue water of the lake.
Ba Be Lake's water is blue all year round due to its unique geological value, formed by the subsidence of limestone mountains more than 200 million years ago. In 1995, Ba Be was recognized by the World Freshwater Lake Conference in the US as one of 20 special freshwater lakes in need of protection.
In 1996, the lake was recognized as a national historical and cultural relic. In 2011, Ba Be was recognized as a Ramsar site-Wetlands of international importance…
With such international recognition, Ba Be Lake’s tourism potential is a “gold mine”. Before the merger, the old Bac Kan province identified tourism as a spearhead economy and Ba Be Lake was identified as a “special highlight”, the focus of the tourism economy.
However, over the years, tourism development in Ba Be Lake has not been able to match its potential. Around the lake, there are only a few homestays and a few accommodation establishments, and no places for entertainment. The main reason is that there is no comprehensive, detailed plan to exploit the tourism potential here. People and even businesses do tourism spontaneously.

Many lakeside areas are broken by unlicensed, messy high-rise buildings. All of this makes Ba Be only attract a small number of domestic tourists, international tourists are only single, diverse individuals exploring.
After the Central Government invested in the old Bac Kan province to open a tourist route to scenic spot With the Ba Be Lake project, significantly shortening the time to the lake, the interest of investors in tourism at the lake has become more active. Large, reputable investors across the country have come to learn, research, and propose. But all are still just proposals because it will be impossible to implement any project without a master plan.
Shaping tourism
When merging into the new Thai Nguyen province, Thai Nguyen's tourism space has become larger. Just two days before merging into the new Thai Nguyen province, the Government approved the Plan for the preservation, restoration and rehabilitation of the special national relic of Ba Be Lake. The Government also assigned the new Thai Nguyen province to implement this plan.
Accordingly, the planned area of the relic has an area of 10,048 hectares, of which protection area I is more than 952 hectares; protection area II is more than 9,095 hectares.
The area to promote the value of the relic is more than 136 hectares, located outside the protected area, and is added to the planning to organize resettlement space, traffic, build technical infrastructure, traffic, build auxiliary service works, and functional areas to serve the management, conservation, and promotion of the value of the relic. This is the "open area" that creates conditions to attract investment to "awaken" tourism at Ba Be Lake in the near future.

To promote values along with conservation, the Government aims to plan for conservation, preservation and promotion of outstanding values in terms of geology, geomorphology, natural landscapes, caves, ecosystems, biodiversity and other unique natural values of the relic.
At the same time, fully identify the unique and outstanding values of scenic spots; resolve problems related to population, tourism development, and technical infrastructure.
The Government requires that the area and functions of the relic protection areas remain intact. Areas to promote value include: Ban Cam village, the National Park management area, and Hua Ma cave area. Priority is given to the construction of service works, technical infrastructure, and on-site resettlement to serve management, conservation, and value promotion.
According to the plan, Ba Be Lake is the core, establishing 4 main functional spaces, including: exploiting the value of river landscape, waterfalls, natural caves, indigenous culture, connecting with Na Hang (Tuyen Quang) in the north. The south forms a space to preserve and promote culture, indigenous architecture, ecological landscape, community culture, tourism along the Leng River.
In the east, a center for reception, operation, exploitation of eco-tourism products, environmental education, and resorts associated with Ba Be National Park will be formed.
The west is a space to preserve and exploit the culture of the indigenous Mong community, combining resort tourism, entertainment and ecology.
The functional spaces are connected along the natural ecological links of Ba Be Lake, National Highway 3C, Khang Ninh-Na Hang and Nam Mau-Quang Khe roads.
The plan also provides detailed directions for 19 functional sub-zones, such as: Dau Dang waterfall, Puong cave, Ao Tien, Hua Ma cave, the area along Leng river, Pac Ngoi, Coc Toc stream, Na Phai residential area, Dan May-Na Nghe...
The Government also plans technical infrastructure including: foreign traffic, internal traffic, static traffic, waterway traffic, upgrading and building new marinas, water supply, electricity supply, wastewater drainage, etc.
The planning will be specified by 7 component projects, including: nature conservation and biodiversity (DA-01); conservation of historical-cultural values, geological heritage, conservation and promotion of intangible cultural heritage values of the community (DA-02); conservation of wetland ecosystems, protection and development of forest ecosystems (DA-03); protection of the water environment of Ba Be Lake (DA-04); development of products and construction of tourism service works (DA-05); construction of heritage database and application of digital technology for sustainable tourism (DA-06); construction of technical infrastructure (DA-07).
The planning implementation period is from 2025 to 2035, with a vision to 2050. In which, from 2025-2030, complete the DA-01 project group; implement the remaining project group. In 2031-2035, complete the DA-02 and DA-03 project groups; continue to implement the remaining project groups. In the period after 2035, complete the remaining projects.
The specific goal set by the Government in the planning is to develop sustainable tourism at Ba Be Lake, form a unique tourism brand, become a national tourist area before 2030 and a key tourist center of the whole region. Northern midlands and mountains.
It can be said that the biggest “bottleneck” hindering the development of Ba Be Lake tourism in recent times has been officially removed by the Government’s planning. After many years of “long sleep”, the green fairy Ba Be is now ready to wake up and shine.
