After losing 1-2 to Real Madrid last weekend, Barcelona lost ground in the race for the top spot with Real Madrid and Girona. Coach Xavi's team faces a difficult away match against last year's top 4 team, Real Sociedad.

Home team Real Sociedad started the game better and had a series of scoring opportunities right from the first minutes. In the opening minutes of the match, Ander Barrenetxea and Mikel Oyarzabal both had the opportunity to test goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Barcelona could not impose their preferred style of play on Imanol Alguacil's team. The home team even continued to create more clear scoring opportunities on a day when Barcelona's defense played uncertainly.

Goalkeeper Ter Stegen had an excellent first half when he continuously made great saves to help Barcelona keep a clean sheet. Entering the second half, the speed of the match decreased significantly and therefore the number of scoring opportunities became limited.

It seemed like the match would end in a 0-0 draw, but the turning point happened when Ilkay Gundogan passed the ball accurately to Ronald Araujo who bravely headed in to score in the third minute of injury time.

The video assistant referee (VAR) technology took a long time to check whether the situation was offside or not, and the goal was recognized to the joy of the Barcelona players.

A 1-0 win over Sociedad moved Barcelona to third in La Liga with 27 points, narrowing the gap to leaders Girona to four. Real Madrid are second with 28 points and will return to the top spot if they beat Vallecano tonight.
